Hello Panther Families, Hello Panther Families,

This year seems to be flying by. Our students are Building the Hill and they are drawing the attention of people all over the state and the nation. Our students are putting in countless hours with non-profit organizations serving senior citizens, people in need, and veterans. They are raising funds to fight cancer.

Our students are providing tutoring services for middle school and high school peers. Spring Sports are well underway and our athletes are impressing like always, our Special Olympics Basketball team won State, our Dance team just won State again, and our Robotics team made it to the PNW Championships again!

Our Musical rehearsals are on track for Open Night on 4/18. Our Advanced Drawing and Painting students won several awards over the past month and many are on display at the BL Library through the rest of March. Our BLHS Jazz Choir, “Vocal Persuasion,” just won 1st Place at the Commencement Bay Jazz Festival then they are off to perform in New York City. Our Culinary Arts FCCLA Restaurant Management team won State for the 3rd time and for the 2nd year in a row. Our FCCLA team qualified for Nationals, yet again! Our BLHS Alumni are competing at the D-1, D-2, and NAIA levels and are impressing.

It’s so great to see all of the efforts that our students are putting into Building the Hill by committing themselves to serving our community through their school. Our community is better because of our Panthers and I am proud of the Perseverance, Ownership, Work Ethic, Engagement, and Respect that the vast majority of them show on a daily basis. Are we perfect, absolutely not, but we are Panthers and we get better each and every day.

Thank you to everyone that supports your students and that has volunteered time to help make all of our school events successful.

Upcoming Schedule Changes Upcoming Schedule Changes

We have two big events coming up next Monday (4/1) and Tuesday (4/2) that will alter our bell schedules or our school day respectively. On April 1st BLHS will be hosting a “No Hate” School Wide anti-bullying assembly. We will be including 8th grade students from Middle School to participate with us. At the same time, BLHS will have its Senior Class Meeting. This is important and students should plan to attend. These will alter our bell schedule so please see below.

On April 2nd BLHS will host our Spring Walk Around Conferences. Because of conferences, there is a half day on that day. School will run from 7:25 to 10:25am. Lunch is not provided. Teachers will be in scheduled meetings with families from 11:30-1:30 and there will be a walk around open conferences, similar to what we did in the fall, from 1:30-6:50pm. These meetings are particularly important because students will be entering the last quarter of the school year before these credits become official on their transcripts. I hope to see everyone there.

Congratulations Congratulations

Princess Addie did a phenomenal job representing Bonney Lake High School on Saturday at the Queen's Coronation event. Although she was not crowned queen, she will continue her duties through the summer as Daffodil Princess for the Daffodil Festival and representing our school. Congratulate her on a job well done!

Come see her at the Grand Floral Parade on Saturday, April 6th. The parade goes through Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting.

Sumner Bonney Lake Spanthers Special Olympics Basketball team

Congratulations to Sumner Bonney Lake Spanthers Special Olympics Basketball team. They competed at the State Tournament on March 1-3, 2024 IN Wenatchee. These Athlete's consist of students from Bonney Lake High School (Panthers), Sumner High School (Spartans), and Community Base Program, therefore the combination of the names Spartans and Panthers became the Spanthers.

These athletes represented our district in a big way and they are extremely excited about having state banners hung in the gyms of their schools alongside their peers.

Dance and Drill

Our Dance and Drill Team brought home yet another State Title for Kick this past weekend. Congratulations ladies! Championships are not won at these competitions but in the hours and hours of work you put into your practice, planning, team building, and so much more. Your Perseverance, Ownership, and your Work Ethic show in all you do.

Robotics

Our Robotics team qualified for the PNW Championships over the weekend! Such a huge accomplishment. They also won their 1st ever Engineering Inspiration Award. This is the highest non-robot Award that a team can receive in a single year. It celebrates Outstanding success in advancing respect and appreciation for engineering within a team, school, organization, and community. By winning this award our team advances to compete at District Championships with 7 other teams to represent our district at worlds.

Jazz Choir

This was the first time our BLHS jazz choir “Vocal Persuasion” performed at the Commencement Bay Jazz Festival in Fife.

There are three different divisions based on school size and we are in the largest with Roosevelt and Ingraham to name a few. Roosevelt was the winner last year. We got invited to sing in the evening concert so we knew we placed….

Drumroll….

We won! We took 1st place!!

HOSA State Competition

Our HOSA State Conference attendees did an amazing job representing our Panther POWER values. Unfortunately, competitions didn’t go as well as we hoped this year and we will not be continuing on to Internationals - it’s hard to know how to prepare for a competition you’ve never experienced and have no student mentors to learn from either, and HOSA competition is pretty fierce.

Parent Preview Night Parent Preview Night

Washington State law requires that every student receives HIV/AIDs prevention education in grades 5 through 12. Because this unit covers sensitive topics, Washington State law and SBLSD board policy require that parents/families are provided the opportunity to preview these lessons.

The Sumner-Bonney Lake School District (SBLSD) is hosting a curriculum night for families to preview the HIV/AIDS prevention curriculum for students enrolled in the following:

  • 6th and 7th grade students (HIV/AIDS),

  • 2nd semester 8th grade Skills for Life (HIV/AIDS) and

  • 9th grade Health classes (Health content), and

  • Applicable 10th through 12th grade classes (HIV/AIDS).

The curriculum will be available for preview. This is an opportunity for parents and guardians to understand the health content for grades 6-12, preview teaching materials and ask questions about the resources used in the classroom.

New Academic Support for Students - Mr. Maggs New Academic Support for Students - Mr. Maggs

Dear Panther Families,

We're excited to announce that Mondays, we will be offering dedicated academic support for all students every Monday morning until the end of the school year. These sessions will run from 7:30 AM to 8:30 AM.

We understand that sometimes students may face challenges in certain subjects or may need additional assistance to reach their academic goals. Our Monday morning support sessions aim to provide exactly that—a supportive environment where students can receive the extra help they need.

Here are some benefits of attending these support sessions:

Our dedicated paraeducators will be available to provide one-on-one or small group assistance, ensuring that each student's individual needs are addressed. We will also be looking to add peer- tutoring as well. Extra support can often lead to improved academic performance. By attending these sessions regularly, students may see a positive change in their grades over time.

We encourage all students to take advantage of this opportunity to enhance their academic skills and reach their full potential. Whether your student needs help with math, science, English, or any other subject, our support sessions are here to assist them on their academic journey.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please don't hesitate to reach out to us. We're here to support both you and your student every step of the way.

Thank you for your continued partnership in your student's education

Mr. Maggs - 11-12th Grade Assistant Principal

Dark Outside and Icy Roads

Please take extra care when dropping students off in the morning.

It is getting dark in the mornings and students and staff members can often be hard to see.

Also, with the changing weather comes icy conditions. Despite having deicing protocol, roads and parking lots can become slippery.

Here is a Link to our district webpage that describes the Inclement Weather Procedures.

Please share this information with your new drivers.

If you have a parking permit please review the Student Handbook pages 9-10 to ensure that we avoid as many issues as possible.

Third, please review this flow map for drop off and pick up.

Cell Phone Policy Cell Phone Policy

zoom_out_map
Staying socially connected and being available are important to our students and families.

Students are free to use their cell phones before/after school, during passing times, and during lunches.

Students are not allowed to use their cell phones and headphones or have them out during class time.

The goal of our cell phone policy is to maximize the safety and the learning of our students in our classrooms while reducing inappropriate and unsafe behavior on electronic devices including; buying and harassment.

The goal is not to be a barrier for parent to student communication.

  • Parents can message their students and they can respond during passing period, during lunch, or before or after school.
  • In the case of an urgent message, please call the BLHS Main Office at 253-891-5700 and we will coordinate connecting you with your student.

Please see
this video that was shared with students in class today.

We know this will be unpopular with many students but we care too much to ignore this important need.
