York High School Weekly Memo

Some thoughts for the starting school year

York High School Weekly Memo Some thoughts for the starting school year
York High SchoolWeekly MemoSome thoughts for the starting school year

Hi Everyone,

We have had a fun-filled and busy week with our students back in the building. Our freshmen orientation kicked off on Tuesday with a day dedicated only to the Class of 2029. It was truly a special day with our Senior Facilitators and our newest Wildcats. Yesterday had the full student body back, and we started the day with a school-wide assembly and had a day filled with relationship-building activities. My favorite part is always the annual senior breakfast at the beach -- it is such a great way to start a very special year.

Next week, we have our i-Ready testing on Monday and Tuesday. All students (9-12) will take their assessment in Pride (7:50-9:45). SRTC students who attend in the morning will complete their diagnostic when they return to YHS on both days.

If you need anything or have any questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Thanks,

Amanda

Open House Open House

Next Wednesday, 9/10, we have our annual Open House. We will begin at 5:00, and you will go through your student's schedule. It is a great opportunity for you to meet their teachers and ask questions specific to their class. If you have two students, you can pick and choose which classes you attend.

Here is the Open House schedule below:

As some of you know, for nearly 20 years, York High School has had a strong connection with the town of Obersulm, Germany, in the form of an exchange between our two high schools. Some of you may have even participated in the exchange. Our German partners will be returning the visit this coming fall. They will arrive in York on Saturday, October 18 and leave on Tuesday, October 28.

We are still looking for host families for eight students. They all speak excellent English and are excited about learning more about York and our school. Your child does not have to speak German, just be willing to learn about another culture and provide a bed and food. They will shadow YHS students for four days in the school and take part in other field trips on the other days. Please contact the school or Frau Kyer (mkyer@yorkschools.org) for more information.

Chromebooks Chromebooks

All students have now received their YSD Chromebook. Please remind them they are required to keep the hard plastic case on their device. If your student is unable to access platforms that are needed for educational purposes, please reach out to us.

There is still time to purchase device protection, and we highly encourage you to do so. Please log into MySchoolBucks.com to register and/or sign in to pay the $26.00 protection fee. Click Browse items and choose Device/chromebook Protection. Choose your student: (You can find your student’s id # in your PowerSchool Parent Portal account. It can be found at the top of each page.), add to the basket and check out.

Senior Parent Night Senior Parent Night

We hope to see you at our Senior Parent Night on Wednesday, September 17th at YHS in the York Community Auditorium from 6 to 7:30. We welcome you to join us for a presentation on the college application process and planning for after high school, tips to start early and stay organized, and information surrounding scholarships.

PowerSchool PowerSchool

Please be sure to complete the annual Back to School / Returning Student Registration forms. You will need to log into your PowerSchool Parent Portal at the following URL:

https://yorkschools.powerschool.com/public

Enter your username and password. In the left-hand navigation column, click on the Forms Icon, then the Enrollment tab. You will see the list of forms that need to be completed. If your student is entering grade 9, you will be asked to upload two proofs of residency.

Late Arrival / Early Dismissal Late Arrival / Early Dismissal

If you are a senior and have a study hall scheduled during the first or last block, you may be eligible for Late Arrival or Early Dismissal. If you are interested in applying, please pick up an application in the main office. Ms. DeMartini will reach out to you when your application has been approved – you must attend your study hall until you hear from her.

Parking and Drop-Off Parking and Drop-Off

If you are a student driver, please park in the large parking lot near the York Community Auditorium entrance. Please remember to drive safely and respectfully while on campus. If you are dropping off your student, please do so in the front loop so your student can enter the building through the main entrance. Please do not drop off or pick up students directly after school at the YCA entrance. This will help with traffic flow and make sure everyone gets where they need to be in a timely manner.

School Breakfast and Lunch School Breakfast and Lunch

School meals continue to be available to all students at no charge again this year, regardless of household income. Students are eligible for one breakfast and one lunch. Student lunch schedules will be based on the classes they are in for block 3. Teachers will share lunch information with students on the first day of school.
