Maple Grove Senior High School student wins art competition
Maxine Cherico, a freshman at Maple Grove Senior High School, was recently selected as a winner in Hennepin County’s student art competition, in partnership with the Minneapolis Institute of Art. The countywide contest, open to students in grades six through 12 who live or attend school in Hennepin County, centered around the theme, “Belonging Begins Here: Our Stories, Our County, and Our Pride.” Winning artwork was honored and displayed at the Minneapolis Institute of Art.
“I chose to enter this piece because I have always had a passion for painting nails. As a child my mom would always paint my nails, and I will always remember sitting in her bedroom anxiously waiting for them to dry,” Cherico said. “It's one of those memories I hold close to my heart and I always couldn't wait to show my friends and tell them that my mom painted my nails for me. I now own a nail business and doing my own nails is one of the biggest ways I express myself. I really enjoy doing other people's nails because I love that I am able to give them an opportunity to express themselves as well.”
