A NOTE FROM MS. SICKLER A NOTE FROM MS. SICKLER

I wanted to ensure you have the details of the district's inclement weather procedures that was shared in Friday's superintendent's message in case you missed it. Here are some additional reminders as the weather gets colder:

  • Morning drop-off for students begins at 8:30 AM. If your student rides the bus, they will not be allowed off the bus until this time.
  • If you are dropping off your student, please do not arrive before 8:30 AM. We encourage you to wait in your car where it is warmer if you arrive early.
  • Families and students should not enter the building prior to 8:35 AM unless they are going to beforecare, as the school opens at that time.
  • We assess the weather each morning and throughout the day to determine if we need to implement indoor lineup and recess. If temperatures are below 10 degrees (considering windchill and "feels like"), we will have indoor lineup and indoor recess, starting at 8:30 AM.

Thank you once again for your cooperation and understanding as we navigate these chilly months together.

District Inclement Weather Procedures

Saline Area Schools administrators closely monitor weather and road conditions during the winter season. Weather is dynamic and temperatures vary throughout the day, which makes decisions about modifications to scheduled activities especially challenging.

Indoor Recess: Principals will consult grade-level teams, weather and playground conditions, and the developmental needs of students when making determinations about recess. Generally speaking, principals will keep students indoors for recess when the temperature including the wind chill falls below 10°F.

Cancellations Due to Extreme Cold: Extreme cold temperatures present additional safety concerns that may necessitate the cancellation of school entirely. Saline Area Schools will cancel school if the ambient air temperature or wind chill is predicted reach -20° F.

Cancellations Due to Road Conditions: Poor road conditions due to weather events may also necessitate a school cancellation. Road conditions are assessed starting at 4:30 a.m. Additionally, the Superintendent or designee consults with area Superintendents when making decisions about cancellations related to road conditions. Every effort will be made to notify families before 6:00 a.m. when school will be closed. When warranted by extreme road conditions, a decision to close school may be made and announced the evening prior.

Communication Strategies: Decisions about school cancellations will be communicated via email, text message, and phone call to parents/guardians with updated emergency contact information on file in the PowerSchool database. Additionally, school cancellation notices will be shared through local media, District social media, and the District website. Notifications will NOT be sent when it is determined that school will be in session as scheduled.

Extracurricular Activities: Elementary and Middle School activities that are scheduled to run immediately after school will be canceled. High School events and activities scheduled after school may be able to continue if road/weather conditions improve. Decisions about all evening activities will be made by mid-day. Coaches and advisors always have the authority to cancel activities at their discretion.

Feedback Needed!! SAS families and community members are encouraged to participate in a survey to guide future educational strategies and investments related to career and technical education. The survey, conducted by Hanover Research on behalf of the Washtenaw Intermediate School District (WISD), should take less than 10 minutes to complete and closes on January 17. WISD will receive survey results only in aggregate form and no personally identifiable information will be collected or reported.
