From The Cockpit (The Principal's Office) From The Cockpit (The Principal's Office)

Dear Mitchell Families,

October was filled with exciting activities and events at our school. Fourteen Mitchell High students took part in two field trips to support their future success. Eight attended Southern Colorado Construction Career Days, doing hands-on projects and meeting industry professionals. Six joined the City of Colorado Springs Jobs trip, met civic leaders, learned about city operations, and explored public service careers. A small group joined off-site flights with Falcon Aerolab. AFJROTC Cadets proudly presented the colors at the Switchbacks game on Saturday, October 4th.These experiences show our shared commitment to empowering students as future leaders.

Mitchell’s College App Day received high praise, being named the best in the district by eight college representatives for its strategic and inclusive planning. Mitchell High School has also been recognized for our work-based learning achievements, as evidenced by the 2nd highest number of job and internship placements in the district and the highest percentage of student placements in jobs and internships.

On Monday, October 20, Parent-Teacher Conferences took place, providing a vital opportunity for families and teachers to connect, discuss student progress, and collaborate for student success.

In closing, Do you know research shows that parent input is linked to better academic achievement, attendance, and graduation rates. From October 15th to November 20th, parents and guardians are encouraged to complete the 5Essentials Parent Survey. Using the link please take a few minutes to complete this survey. https://survey.5- essentials.org/sd11/survey/parent

Student Life Student Life

Extracurricular activities provide a channel for reinforcing the lessons learned in the classroom, offering students the opportunity to apply academic skills in a real-world context, and are thus considered part of a well-rounded education. Recent research suggests that participation in extracurricular activities may increase students' sense of engagement or attachment to their school, and thereby decrease the likelihood of school failure and dropping out.

Galley Road Bridge Replacement

Construction Update - Oct. 13, 2025

Galley Road bridge construction continues

Galley Road bridge construction continues this fall. Before reopening Galley Road, several key construction activities must be completed. Crews will place the concrete culvert top for the Galley Road crossing over West Fork Sand Creek this month. Construction is also underway on the wing walls, which help retain earth and guide water flow through the new culvert. After these structural items are complete, crews will begin backfilling the culvert and preparing to pour concrete for each bridge approach.

Crews will then finish placing new storm sewer pipes and drainage inlets on both sides of the bridge. Asphalt paving and lane striping will follow curb and gutter placement.

Colorado Springs Utilities is currently relocating additional gas and electric facilities within the work zone. Utility work in the immediate area of the creek is expected to be completed by late October.

Bridge reopening is expected this fall. Once the bridge reopens, one lane in each direction will be available while finishing work continues.

New sidewalk and trail crossing improvements are under construction

The new bridge will be approximately 20 feet wider to provide two travel lanes in each direction, a center turn lane, an eight-foot sidewalk on the north side of the bridge, and a 10-foot sidewalk on the south side.

A new pedestrian-activated signal will be installed at the Homestead Trail connection at the east end of the bridge. More information on Colorado Springs urban trail network can be city's Parks, Trails and Open Spaces web page.

About the Project

The Galley Road bridge over West Fork Sand Creek will be replaced with a new structure that better accommodates high-flow events in the creek and transportation needs above ground. More information on the bridge project is available on the Galley Road Bridge Replacement project web page.

5Essentials Purpose and Intention 5Essentials Purpose and Intention

About the 5Essentials System The 5Essentials framework defines five key supports linked to student success:

• Effective Leaders

• Collaborative Teachers

• Ambitious Instruction

• Supportive Environment

• Involved Families Schools strong in these essentials show higher student growth, attendance, and engagement.

Why the Parent Survey Matters;

The 5Essentials Parent Survey gives families a voice in shaping stronger schools. Your feedback helps identify what’s working well and where schools can grow—supporting better teaching, leadership, and family partnerships. Schools use the results to guide improvement plans, strengthen communication, and build more supportive learning environments for every student.

Research Impact:

Schools strong on at least three of the five essentials are up to ten times more likely to improve student learning. Even small gains in these areas predict better outcomes over time.

D11 Cell Phone Policy

Middle School and High School (Grades 6-12)

Personal technology devices (cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, etc.) will be secured in Yondr pouches for the duration of the instructional day.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A STUDENT IS CAUGHT USING THEIR PHONE DURING SCHOOL?

Our Code of Conduct uses a progressive discipline approach, meaning consequences become more severe if students are cited for the same infraction more than once. For a first offense, the phone will be confiscated and returned at the end of the school day. Additional infractions may result in suspension. Please see D11 ABCs Of The Learning Environment.
