Message from the Superintendent

In honor of National Teacher Appreciation Week, our community showed its appreciation for our teachers and staff for their dedication and devotion to their work. The School Board recognized the week of gratitude with a proclamation: “Teachers spend countless hours preparing lessons, evaluating progress, counseling and coaching students, and performing community service; and our community recognizes and supports its teachers in educating the children of this community.” Parents/guardians and students filled our schools with abundant flowers, food, and festivities. All very much appreciated the heartfelt gestures. Thank you!

Heat Brings Need for Lighter Attire, More Water

Due to hotter-than-normal temperatures in our area over the next few days, people are advised to wear lightweight, loose clothing, drink extra water, and limit outdoor activity. In school, we will take precautions and monitor students for heat concerns. Students may drink water on the bus. Please try to use flip-tip water bottles to avoid spills. Thank you.

Next Steps Regarding Oak Creek Incident

We appreciate our community’s support and cooperation in response to the bomb threat Oak Creek received on Tuesday. A threat is always serious, and despite the concern it raises, Oak Creek staff, students, and families handled the incident exceptionally well.

Our district and school staff trained in evacuation incidents assisted in reunifying students with their parents and guardians. While the controlled release was in progress, the Lake Oswego Police Department, with assistance from other agencies, searched the school and found no evidence of a credible threat.

We have since learned that the threat was made via a phone call from the same New Jersey IP address that made threats to schools in California and Eugene, Oregon. The Federal Bureau of Investigation is involved in the investigation. Detectives ask anyone with information about the source of the threat to call our non-emergency number (503) 635-0238 or submit a tip on the LOPD website.

Community Review: New K12 Math Curriculum

Our curriculum and instruction representatives recommended new K-12 mathematics textbooks and materials to the School Board. They shared the review process, provided perspectives, and answered questions. Our educators propose:
  • K-5 iReady from Curriculum Associates
  • 6-8 Big Ideas from Cengage
  • 9-12 Big Ideas from Cengage

The proposed math curriculum is available for public review through May 17. Find details on the district website under Curriculum Adoption. Feedback from the public review will be shared before the School Board takes action on adopting a new curriculum.

Verify Your Student's Information

Do you still need to verify the information in our system? We have found that a lot of "home" numbers are now abandoned landlines, yet more than 320 of our households list home numbers as their only numbers. Please take a moment to ensure your contact numbers are accurate.

Log into ParentVUE and review/update your students' information through the Register/Verify tab. If you have forgotten your ParentVUE password, go to the login page, click "I am a Parent," then click "Forgot Password." If you are unsure whether you have a ParentVUE account, contact your student's school. For assistance with the verification process, refer to the user guide on the LOSD website or contact your student's school.

Spring Advisory Committee Meeting

Our School Board hosted the Spring 2023 Districtwide Advisory Committee Meeting to highlight progress and accomplishments from this school year and make plans for 2023-2024. Input from advisory committee members helps inform our school board's policy decisions and work with the superintendent to advise and lead our district's practices. We all work together to bring to life our mission and achieve our vision for students, and we are very fortunate to have such a robust and high-functioning partnership. Thank you to all who serve our district and schools.

New Students Appointed to School Board

Lake Oswego High School’s Abby Flaa and Lakeridge High School’s Ayse Bakircioglu have been named the student representatives for the School Board for the 2023-2024 school year. They will succeed current representatives Samantha Jarquin and Jacob Stuckey whose terms end in June. Congratulations Abby and Ayse! We look forward to your advocacy and insights on behalf of our students.

Relocating Dedicated Systems of Support

For the past two years, LOSD has embarked on a multi-year plan to relocate our dedicated systems of support, e.g., specialized classrooms for ACCESS, DELTA, and Pathways, to better balance special education services on both sides of the lake and provide students and families with greater inclusion in their neighborhood schools. Phases 1 and 2 are complete, and the third phase will be in place starting in 2023-2024. We applaud our staff and families for their diligence and care throughout this significant change to improve efficacy and outcomes for students. Please help us make all students and families feel welcome in our schools.

Hands-Only CPR Campaign Success

Using social media for good, LOSD partnered with the City of Lake Oswego to promote life-saving Hands-Only CPR. Mayor Buck challenged Superintendent Schiele, who then started a chain of challenges from our school board to our student reps to our administrators and teachers. We are pleased the campaign engaged more than 25,000 people!

Equity Through Our Organization

To cascade equitable expectations and practices through our organization, we have shifted the role of one equity director into the responsibility of all administrators. We hired equity consultants Engage to Change to guide our administrators, principals, vice principals, and directors through a year-long training. Next year we will extend the training to our building instructional team leaders and students, with each iteration reaching further into our system.

Childcare Serving More Students

Beyond the school day, our district strives to be a good community partner. To provide more families access to before and after care services, we invited third-party childcare providers to offer their services at our elementary schools. The new model, which reintroduced childcare to neighborhood locations, resulted in a 350% increase in students served (110 to 400 children!) from last year. Should you have questions about the service, Champions area manager Stephanie Scanlon is the best person to contact. She can be reached at: LakeOswegoChampions@discoverchampions.com

Changes to COVID-19 Response

The Oregon Department of Education and Oregon Health Authority has updated requirements for school districts' communicable disease management planning for the 2023-24 school year. Included are the following changes to our COVID-19 response:

Change to Exposure, Isolation Guidance Starting May 11

  • A five-day period of isolation for those infected with COVID-19 is no longer recommended for the general population, including people in K-12 education settings. Our schools will continue to follow the recommendation for students and staff to stay home until fever free for 24 hours and symptoms improve.

  • Several sources of COVID-19 data ended. We will archive our dashboard and CDC Community Level metrics shared in our newsletter, website, and school signage.

Vaccination No Longer Required For School Staff, Volunteers Starting June 17

  • The COVID-19 vaccination requirement for public and private school teachers, staff, and school volunteers (OAR 333-019-1030) will be lifted. That means that after June 16, teachers, school staff, and school volunteers will no longer have to provide proof of vaccination or have a valid medical or religious exception on file to be in direct or indirect contact with students.

Reminders from Our District Nurses

Asthma/Allergy Medications at School

It is critical to the health and safety of your student to bring ALL doctor-recommended medications to school. Over the summer, speak with your doctor to get the proper supplies for school, and then go to the LOSD web page to find the proper forms to be completed with the medications. If your student is in Elementary or Secondary and will store their meds at school, watch for a medication drop-off time for your particular school. If they are in secondary and keeping their medication in their possession, please submit the proper paperwork so we know where to find their medication in case of an emergency.

Individualized Health Plan? - Watch for an Email

If your child has an LOSD Individualized Health Plan (IHP) developed in consultation with your District Nurse, please watch for an email! Your response is needed to confirm or update your student's plan. We appreciate your prompt reply.

Immunizations

Please review the OHA requirements and information on required immunizations for students. Please arrange to complete immunizations and update Synergy over the summer to avoid exclusion in 2024.
