The School Board celebrated Bernice Young Elementary School SPED Teacher Lindsay Rankin, who was named the 2027-28 Teacher of the Year Oct. 8 at a surprise ceremony at the school.

"I am so grateful that the people that I love are here to share this recognition with me...This has not been something I did on my own. Thank you for the support I received from my team, the school, and my family. I feel this award affirms the work we do every day for our students," Rankin said.

Rankin was recognized for her leadership, expanding educational opportunities for students with disabilities, and her commitment to student success. She was selected from a pool of 15 finalists and five semi-finalists.

National Principals Month National Principals Month

The School Board also recognized October as National Principals Month, which celebrates the leaders who bring their schools and communities to life. Principals lead with courage, vision and heart, and their voices have the power to shape the future of education.

A principal’s voice is more than what they say. It is reflected in the decisions they make, the people they champion, the culture they create and the opportunities they build for every student and staff member. When principals use their voices, they help move their schools, communities, and the profession forward.

National Principals Month is a time to celebrate that voice. It is an opportunity for principals to recognize their own impact, lift up their peers and remind one another that no school leader is alone in this work. Across the country, principals are sharing ideas, navigating challenges, celebrating successes, and advocating for what their students, staff and communities need.

This October, we celebrate the voices of principals and the difference they make every day. We encourage everyone to recognize a principal whose leadership has made an impact and join the conversation using #ThankAPrincipal.

Three Archer Learning Center representatives attended the inaugural National Alternative Education Day on the Hill on Oct. 8 in Washington, D.C.

Students Santila Calep and Gerson Polanco and Principal Dr. Coby Davis attended the National Alternative Education Association event to create a national advocacy gathering that brought students, educators and leaders from non-traditional and alternative education programs face-to-face with members of Congress and legislative staff.

The event helped participants and presenters share personal educational journeys, raise awareness, and advocate for equitable resources and support systems in alternative education.

Santila and Gerson were part of an exclusive group of about 13 national student delegates to travel to Washington, D.C., and share their stories.
