THE CAVALIER CHRONICLE
January 2025
PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
We held our holiday celebration on December 29th and it seems like everyone had a great time. It ran longer than most years as we ended the day with bingo and everybody wanted to keep going, but we ran out of prizes. We are now starting to reach out for ideas on where to hold the event next year and the board will be picking the date at our next meeting.
We are now into final preparation for the Specialty in a couple of weeks (February 1st and 2nd). If you want to volunteer to help us out, please let me know.
We will begin work shortly on building the board for next year. Many of the current board have been in their roles for several years and may be ready for a bit of a break. If you want us to consider you for a role, please reach out to me.
Thanks
Jim

2024 HOLIDAY LUNCHEON INFORMATION
We had our holiday luncheon on Sunday December 29th from 1pm to 4pm at the home of Jim & Sharon Utych. We had a wonderful turnout and the weather turned out to be sunny from a stormy night. We recognized our 20 year members – John & Rita Guest and also our 5 year members – Ashley Powell, Ed & Leslie Lucas, Hazel Linn, LaVada McCosh and Macrae Evans.
Jim also recognized Michele True with an Appreciation Award to thank her for her work on comprising our ads for our Winter Specialty shows for the past three years. Jim mentioned that he felt that especially this year our ad that went into the parent club yearbook was by far the best of all the regional clubs! Kudos to Michele’s artistic talent!
Jim thanked Beth Pedersen for her volunteer efforts this year, especially at our Meet the Breed booth at the Lawrenceville KC event in September. Jim also thanked Paula Ayers for her hard work on contracting judges for our Specialty shows as it is a tough job to do.
The 2024 President’s Award was presented to Beth Lassiter for her exemplary work on the newsletter, her many volunteer efforts including co-chairing our specialty and stepping up to be the club’s delegate to the Georgia Canine Coalition.
We had a great time socializing, toasting our club, celebrating our dog’s achievements this past year, stealing great gifts at our white cavalier gift exchange, fun raffles and a New Year bingo which was a big hit! (we may have to continue Bingo this year!)
Thank you to everyone who came. We appreciate all our club members and hope everyone had a great time to close out 2024!

2025 HOLIDAY PARTY - WE NEED YOUR INPUT
While we had a great time at Jim & Sharon's home this past year, we are looking for another location to hold the party in 2025. There are a few options under consideration:
- Paces Ferry Inn (assuming we can reserve it)
- someone's house (but would require a host)
- a restaurant's banquet room (something like Magianno's, but this would require a pre-payment and may average approximately $50 per person)
Please follow this link to provide your input (via Survey Monkey).

WHAT'S IN A NAME?
We've added a "What's in a Name" section to highlight our club's kennels and how they chose their name. This month, we're highlighting Monticello Cavaliers.
Kennel Name: Monticello Cavaliers
Location: a little bit outside of the small, rural town of Monticello, GA.
Established: 1997
Pronounced: "mon-tah-sell-oh" not to be confused with "mon-tah-chell-oh". It really just depends on where you're from!
Meaning: We chose "Monticello" because our family history dates back to being in the area for over 200 years. Monticello is known for its beauty and history and that correlates perfectly with our Cavaliers!
If you'd like your kennel to be featured, please respond to the next Newsletter request email!
SPORTS CORNER: S.T.A.R. PUPPY
AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy is a program designed to get dog owners and their puppies off to a good start. STAR stands for Socialization, Training, Activity and a Responsible owner. It is an excellent first in-person training class for puppies, provides a good foundation for basic manners, and creates steps towards the Canine Good Citizens title. In the past, the completion of the S.T.A.R. puppy program earned owners and their puppy an award, but in exciting news, owners can now choose to earn STAR as an official title!!!
HOW IT WORKS
Owners and their puppy attend an AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy class for at least 6 weeks. The instructor will administer the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy test at the end of the course. Upon passing the test, the owner will receive an application to send to AKC for the certificate or title (includes certificate). First time STAR puppies will receive the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy Medal, owner and puppy will be listed in the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy records.
WHAT'S ON THE TEST
The following behaviors are expected/tested at the end of the 6 week course.
- Owners
- Maintains puppy’s health (vaccines, exams, appears healthy)
- Owner receives Responsible Dog Owner’s Pledge
- Owner describes adequate daily play and exercise plan
- Owner and puppy attend at least 6 classes by an AKC Approved CGC Evaluator
- Owner brings bags to classes for cleaning up after puppy
- Owner has obtained some form of ID for puppy-collar tag, etc.
- Puppies
- Free of aggression toward people during at least 6 weeks of class
- Free of aggression toward other puppies in class
- Tolerates collar or body harness of owner’s choice
- Owner can hug or hold puppy (depending on size)
- Puppy allows owner to take away a treat or toy
- Pre-Canine Good Citizen Skills
- Allows (in any position) petting by a person other than the owner
- Grooming-Allows owner handling and brief exam (ears, feet)
- Walks on a Leash-Follows owner on lead in a straight line (15 steps)
- Walks by other people-Walks on leash past other people 5-ft away
- Sits on command-Owner may use a food lure
- Down on command-Owner may use a food lure
- Comes to owner from 5-ft when name is called
- Reaction to Distractions-distractions are presented 15-ft away
- Stay on leash with another person (owner walks 10 steps and returns)
AN EVALUATOR PERSPECTIVE
“The AKC STAR puppy class is one of my favorite classes to teach. It is so rewarding to see how much progress these dogs make in just 6 weeks. Owners feel more confident when they see their dogs improving and they are more comfortable taking them outside of the home for outings. Many of our STAR graduates go on to earn their CGC, become therapy dogs, and/or compete in dog sports. I think it is such a wonderful class for all puppy owners to take!”
HOW TO FIND A CLASS

How To Treat A UTI In Female & Male Dogs: Signs & Symptoms, Treatment, Causes, Prevention & More
Sadie Cornelius
September 27, 2024, Canine Journal
Dog UTI Treatment
Before you start treatment, you’ll want to verify that your dog has a urinary tract infection. You should take your dog to the vet to diagnose the UTI (unless your dog suffers from regular UTIs and you have a game plan that you have gone over with your dog’s vet.) Your vet will analyze your dog’s urine via a sample. They may collect it using what’s called cystocentesis, a syringe needle into your dog’s bladder (often guided using an ultrasound). The vet may also take some X-rays or perform an ultrasound to get a closer look at your dog’s urinary tract, especially the bladder. For treatment, your veterinarian will most likely prescribe medication, such as antibiotics, to treat the infection.
Dog UTI Symptoms
Common symptoms include:
- Needing to urinate more frequently
- Loss of appetite
- Lethargy
- Straining or crying out when urinating
- Urine that’s bloody, cloudy, or both
- Licking the genital area
- Urine with a strong odor
- Fever
- Accidents in the house
As with any infection, your dog may show signs of pain, including lack of appetite, difficulty breathing, or lethargy.
6 Dog UTI Home Remedies
There are many dog UTI home treatment options to help your dog feel more comfortable and recover. Below are six dog UTI home remedy options. Please check with your vet before administering a dog UTI treatment at home.
- Add one teaspoon (for small dogs) or 1-2 tablespoons (for large dogs) of apple cider vinegar to your dog’s water bowl. Repeat up to 2 times per day for up to 7 to 10 days, depending on how severe the UTI is. Be sure to have a second bowl of water without apple cider vinegar in case your dog doesn’t like the taste.
- Have your dog soak in a hot bath (make sure it’s not too hot and the level isn’t too deep) for 10 minutes to help relieve the muscles. Wash your dog with a mild soap and pay attention to the genital area. Don’t leave soap on the area for too long, and be sure to rinse the area with clean, warm water. Do this every few days until the UTI is gone.
- Encourage your dog to drink more water by placing extra water bowls around the house. Change the water once or twice a day to make sure it’s fresh.
- Crush one 500mg Vitamin C tablet and sprinkle it over your dog’s food. Do this once per day for 7 days.
- Give your dog 1-3 teaspoons of citrus juice. The juice should NOT be from concentrate and SHOULD be all-natural. Make sure there is no added sugar because it could aggravate your dog’s UTI.
- Add about 2 teaspoons of chopped blueberries or cranberries to your dog’s food. Do this twice per day for 7 to 10 days.
Can I Give My Dog Cranberry Juice?
We recommend speaking to your dog’s vet about this. Each dog is unique, and what works for one may be dangerous for another. We strongly urge you to speak with your dog’s vet before administering any type of treatment.
Can I Give My Dog Cranberry Pills?
Please check with your dog’s veterinarian before giving cranberry pills to your dog.
