Weekly Newsletter 1/16/26
Hello and happy Saturday morning!
(this week's newsletter is a little later than other weeks --sorry about that!)
It was another great week at SCS. January marks the middle of the school year, and this week students did a number of mid-year assessments in reading and math. Teachers are busy preparing students’ report cards and reflecting on the great learning and growing students have accomplished since September. In addition to report cards, families will receive their child’s FastBridge screener results showing the progress they've made in grade level reading and math skills and how it compares to other grade level peers across the nation (national percentile). The assessment data we collect helps us know how students are doing in order to adjust our instruction, like whether a teacher should move onto a new set of skills or continue working on skills not mastered yet. Please note, the indicators we use are generally based on end-of-year grade level standards. This means most students will be approaching the standard at this point, because it’s only half-way through the year. All parents are welcome to reach out to their child’s teacher to ask questions or talk more about their progress, academically and behaviorally, at any time.
Thanks for reading the updates below.
Remember, it’s a four day weekend due to observance of Martin Luther King Day on Monday and for a teacher work day on Tuesday. Enjoy the long weekend!
Best,
Tracey
The Week in Photos
SCS band and chorus students welcomed the Shoreham and Weybridge band and chorus students for their first of two combined rehearsals. The three-schools combined concert will be Tuesday, February 10th. Mark your calendars!
The 1st graders are experts at digraphs. And Ms. Rubright and Mrs. Hayes were wearing nearly matching t-shirts from their favorite kindergarten teacher comedian, Josh King.
Teacher & Staff News
It is with mixed emotions that we share the news of Lili Foster’s retirement from full time teaching at the end of this school year. We are so excited she has reached this major milestone (retirement!) yet are very sorry she will be leaving Salisbury Community School. She started teaching in Salisbury in 1991 --before the current school was even built. She’s dedicated 38 years of service to teaching, first as a classroom teacher and then as an academic interventionist. Her academic expertise and tireless work ethic have impacted countless students over the years. Words cannot express how grateful we are for all she’s done for SCS and ACSD.
Ms Foster's first class at SCS in 1991. Can you recognize these former students?!
Salisbury School staff picture. Can you recognize these veteran teachers?!
We're excited to welcome Milo Rees to our SCS School community. He will be helping out in classrooms and supervising our Extended Day Program. We're so glad he's decided to work with our students and staff this semester!

Transition Update from Bridport & Shoreham
In November, the ACSD Board voted to educate Shoreham and Bridport together at Bridport school beginning in August 2026. The Shoreham building will also begin a new chapter, educating preschool students. We want to share the principal update with all members of our community:
Jenny Urban will continue as the full-time principal at Bridport Central School, and Lashawn Whitmore-Sells will join her as a 0.5 principal.
Principal Whitmore-Sells will also be the preschool administrator at Shoreham, working with our preK team to stabilize and grow our early childhood programming by relocating our Bridport PreK classroom to Shoreham Elementary School, expanding preK offerings, and exploring birth-to-3 partnerships to best serve our communities.
Principals Urban and Whitmore-Sells both bring exceptional care for our students and staff, and we are incredibly lucky to benefit from their expertise as we move forward.
Run for School Board!
Help shape the future of education in our community! The ACSD Board will have open School Board seats this year in Bridport, Middlebury, and Salisbury. If you're interested, gather signatures* on your nominating petition and submit the petition and your Candidate Consent form to your Town Office by January 26, 2026.This is also a great time to reach out to encourage someone you think would be a great candidate! Board elections occur on Town Meeting Day, March 3, 2026. Terms are 3 years. You must be 18 or older and a resident of the respective town to run. You'll play a crucial role in enhancing our schools and advocating for every student. Learn more on the Running for School Board page of the Vermont School Board Association website.
* Petitions must be signed by 60 voters or one percent of the ACSD checklist—whichever is less. Petitions and the Candidate Consent Form are available with the links above, at your Town Hall, or the ACSD District Office (49 Charles Ave, Middlebury).
