Energy Drinks at School

Conway School does not allow students to have energy drinks on campus. We have had an increase at the middle school level with some students bringing energy drinks as their breakfast of choice and consuming large quantities prior to class starting. Additionally a few are substituting their lunch for these drinks as well.

One of the biggest health concerns with these drinks is the sheer amount of caffeine: one can often contains much more caffeine than a cup of coffee (and a concoction of other stimulants, artificial flavourings and sugar).

Long and Short Term Behavioral and Health Implications.

Behavioral implications of consuming energy drinks include:
  • increased irritability
  • inability to concentrate
  • mood changes throughout the day
  • nervousness
  • anxiety
  • sleeplessness
  • in severe cases addiction

Health implications of consuming energy drinks include:

  • headaches
  • heart palpitations
  • heart failure
  • nausea and stomach problems
  • insulin sensitivity
  • dental issues
  • weight gain
  • weight loss for those that consume the drink instead of eating

What happens if my student brings an energy drink to school?

As with other restricted items, the drink will be confiscated. If the container is open, the drink will be disposed of. For unopened drinks, parents have the option of picking up the drink in the office or requesting the school dispose of it.

There is no disciplinary action associated with having the energy drink.
