Happy March, DMS Family! 🌸🌼

I cannot believe we have reached the month of March! There are so many wonderful things happening at Demopolis Middle School, and I am excited to share a few updates with you.

Over the next several weeks, students will spend additional time preparing for the ACAP during third period advisory on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Our students even voted on the name for this focused test prep time — and they chose “Mastery Minutes!” ⏱️📚 During Mastery Minutes, students are strategically placed in specific classrooms to target specific skills. We have implemented this structure for the past four years, and it has proven to be very successful.

While we are on the topic of state testing, please make note of our ACAP schedule 📝:

  • April 7 & 8 – ELA ✏️

  • April 9 – Science (6th and 8th grade only) 🔬

  • April 14 & 15 – Math ➗

Some small-group testing will take place prior to April 7. I will share additional details as testing season approaches.

One of the most valuable things you can do as a parent or guardian is to emphasize the importance of consistent practice leading up to the test. iReady lessons, Mastery Minutes activities, classwork, and homework are all aligned to the Alabama State Standards and serve as preparation for ACAP. Encouraging your child to stay focused and give their best effort each day truly makes a difference. 💪✨

To help students manage testing stress, our sixth graders recently participated in a test anxiety presentation by Latasha Taylor with READY on February 23. Our 7th and 8th graders will attend the same presentation on March 9. We appreciate the support in helping our students feel confident and prepared. 😊

To balance all of the hard work, we have also added a little fun to the school day! 🎶 On days when we do not have Mastery Minutes, students are participating in our “Who’s Behind the Beat?” contest. Teachers’ favorite songs are played, and students compete to match the teacher to the song. We kicked off the competition this week, and it has already been a fun and engaging break in the day! 🎧🏆

Spring sports are in full swing! ⚾🥎🎾⚽ We are proud of our student-athletes and appreciate your continued support.

As a reminder, the easiest way to speak with an administrator or our counselor is to schedule an appointment. 📅 While emergencies do arise, our days are filled with many responsibilities that can shift quickly. Scheduling ahead ensures we can dedicate uninterrupted time specifically to you.

With spring fever setting in 🌷, we are seeing an increase in discipline referrals. Some concerns are stemming from incidents that occur outside of school. Please remind your children that while we cannot address issues that happen off campus, if those issues are brought onto campus, consequences will be assigned according to the DCS Code of Conduct. Your partnership in reinforcing expectations is greatly appreciated. 🤝

Spring Break (March 16–20) is just around the corner! 🌞 A little time away to rest and recharge will be beneficial for everyone as we prepare for a strong finish to the school year.

Thank you for your continued support of Demopolis Middle School. We are grateful for our DMS families and stakeholders! 💙
