From the School Counselor

Now that the school year is back in full swing, I wanted to take this opportunity to tell you about some exciting events happening for high schoolers regarding college planning. It's never too early to start thinking about this once you get into your high school years!

Each year, ICAN puts on a "college week" with 4 virtual events, one for each high school grade level, to provide information and assist students with planning for their futures! That's right: you can attend this event from the comfort of your own home!

The dates and times are listed below.

  • Monday, Sept. 18: Senior Night @ 5:30 p.m.
  • Tuesday, Sept. 19: Junior Night @ 5:30 p.m.
  • Wednesday, Sept 20: Sophomore Night @ 5:30 p.m.
  • Thursday, Sept. 21: Freshman Night @ 5:30 p.m.

These events include lots of great information, as well as live discussion panels and Q&A with current college students and college employees! There are lots of updates to the FAFSA this year, so SENIORS, this would be a great time to ask any questions regarding that!

To register, please visit this website: www.ICANsucceed.org/ontrack

As a reminder, I am at the school Monday through Friday from 7:45-3:45 and can be reached by email, jaden.bohr@riceville.k12.ia.us, or by phone, 985-641-2288!

Thank you!

The results are in and the Riceville Community School District patrons passed the Physical Plant Equipment Levy (PPEL) along with the Revenue Purpose Statement. THANK YOU to all who voted on Tuesday!

PPEL is now extended for 10 years. This is NOT a new tax, just the continuation of what we have in place already! The revenue purpose statement will allow us to spend the dollars as stated. We will continue to engage families, students, staff, and community members in our work to do what is best for our students and community. THANK YOU!!!

The conservation students attended the Iowa Trappers Convention held in Osage on Friday, September 8. Students gained knowledge about the sport of trapping and how it serves as a vital wildlife management tool. Examples of how trapping can be used as a wildlife management tool include, but are not limited to: harvesting wildlife for sustainable use; preventing or responding to animals causing property damage; helping to recover or protect endangered or threatened species; managing invasive wildlife; controlling overpopulation of species; and for researching or relocating certain animal species. Well-known trappers provided students with trapping techniques which included information on types of traps, attractors and lures, preparing and tanning hides, and setting tactics for specific terrestrial furbearers including mink, bobcat, coyote, raccoon, and beaver.
