District 18 Delegation in Support of Rock View District 18 Delegation in Support of Rock View

We are thrilled to share that the District 18 Delegation secured $150,000 in the Fiscal Year 2027 budget for the Rock View Elementary School playground!

On May 7th, we were honored to welcome members of the District 18 Delegation to Rock View as they presented us with a ceremonial check celebrating this exciting investment in our students and community.

We extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Jeff Waldstreicher and Delegates Jared Solomon, Aaron Kaufman, and Emily Shetty for their partnership and support in helping us expand and beautify our playground space for all students and families.

This incredible investment represents the power of community advocacy and shared commitment to creating joyful, engaging spaces where children can learn, play, and grow.

We are excited for what’s ahead and look forward to sharing updates as this vision becomes a reality for Rock View!

Thank You, RVES Community! Thank You, RVES Community!

As Staff Appreciation Week comes to a close, we want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the entire Rock View Elementary School community for celebrating and supporting our staff in such meaningful ways this past week.

Our staff truly felt the love, kindness, and appreciation from students, families, and the community. From thoughtful notes and words of encouragement to the delicious treats and meals, our team was well fed with love and joy all week long!

Thank you to everyone who donated, organized, contributed, and helped make this week so special. Your generosity and support mean more than words can express, and it reminded our staff how valued and appreciated they are each and every day.

We are so grateful to be part of such a caring and supportive school community.

Attendance Matters Attendance Matters

I want to share an update regarding student attendance. We are continuing to work on reducing chronic absenteeism across all grade levels, as lower percentages reflect stronger attendance.

Chronically Absent % As of May 7th

Kindergarten- 24.39 (+1.22%)

1st Grade- 15% (-0%)

2nd Grade- 20.19% (+1.92%)

3rd Grade- 16.5% (-.64%)

4th Grade- 12.50% (-0%)

5th Grade- 18.56% (-0%)

As of today, 17.79% of our students are identified as Chronically Absent, which reflects a decrease of -3.36% compared to last year and +.39% from last week!

SATISFACTORY: 9 or fewer absences during the school year.

Best chance to develop essential grade-level skills for success now and in the future.

CAUTION / WARNING: 10–17 days absent during the school year.

In danger of falling behind and not developing essential grade-level skills.

CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM: 18 or more days absent during the school year.

Missing critical instruction time and at the greatest risk of falling behind and/or dropping out of school.

Every day of school matters.

Beautification Day & Growing Together 🌸

Thank you to all of our families, staff, and students who joined us for Beautification Day on Saturday, April 25th! Your time, energy, and teamwork helped make our school campus even more welcoming, vibrant, and beautiful for everyone. From refreshing our outdoor spaces to helping improve the appearance of our courtyard and school grounds, it was a wonderful reminder of what we can accomplish when our school community comes together.

We even had a special surprise during the day—one of our friendly Rock View birds laid a couple of eggs right on campus! It felt like the perfect symbol of the season: growth, new beginnings, and the care we continue to pour into our school and students each day. Moments like that remind us that Rock View is more than just a school—it is a community where we nurture, grow, and thrive together.

Thank you again for helping us make Rock View shine!

~AP Helse

Happy May Rock View! We are nearing the end of the year and onto our last Character theme with Reflection! Reflection means being able to look back on our words and actions and think about what we can improve in the future. Take some time to reflect on the school year with your students. What went well and what do we want to work on next year? May is a great time to do this as we look to finishing up the year strong. Check out the newsletter for more on Reflection. We've kept our section on Test-Taking Tips because we know a lot of our 3-5th grade students are really getting into MCAP this month, so check that out as well 🙂

Volunteer Information Volunteer Information

Volunteers Make a Difference
MCPS welcomes volunteers! Our schools are stronger because parents, caregivers, and community members step in to help. Whether it’s chaperoning a trip, coaching, or lending a hand in the classroom, volunteers make a real difference for kids. At the same time, nothing matters more than keeping every child safe. That’s why we require all volunteers to complete the required training—and some volunteers must also complete a fingerprinted background check, including:

  • Volunteer coaches

  • Grade 6 Outdoor Education

  • Overnight or extended day field trip chaperones (returning after 7:00 p.m. or out-of-area/state)

  • Volunteers working 1:1 with students unsupervised

For more information about being a volunteer with MCPS, visit these websites
