ELA- Mrs. Forderhase

This week in ELA, we transitioned from author’s purpose of persuade, inform, and entertain to the specific study of information text features and structure. Students read a short article and viewed video lessons that reviewed text features and introduced the common text structures used in informative writing: description, sequence, cause and effect, compare and contrast, and problem and solution. We also continued our review of compound sentences. Students responded to writing prompts every day, and I provided feedback on last week’s writing in Google classroom. Please encourage your children to read the private comments I left for them. Students should continue to read for at least 15 minutes a day.

Next week, we will continue this study of information text and learn about complex sentences. Thank you as always for your support during this difficult time. Stay well!

Science- Mrs. Kenney

This week in science, we continued with our Waves Unit. Students started with an online reading of light and sound waves. Then, students read about earthquakes and tsunamis and how they relate to waves. Students also had the option to complete a STEM challenge with a remote control. We will continue with our Waves Unit next week. Students received assignments in Google Classroom. Instructions for each assignment and due dates are posted in Google Classroom. Please email or call with any questions or concerns.

Social Studies- Mr. Ward

This week in Social Studies students learned about Eli Whitney’s cotton gin. They then analyzed the impact that this invention had on slavery. After watching two videos giving them background knowledge on the cotton gin, they determined if Eli Whitney was a hero or a villain. In the second assignment, students participated in a History Investigation. In this assignment, students analyzed several primary sources related to the north and the south before the outbreak of the civil war in the United States.

Please feel free to email me with any questions or concerns. I hope you are all doing well and thank you for your support.
