Workshop Model: Debrief and Formative Assessment

Week of January 30th:
  • The Workshop Model: Debrief and Formative Assessment
    • Debriefing Defined
    • Formative Assessment Defined

The Workshop Model: Debrief & Formative Assessment The Workshop Model: Debrief & Formative Assessment

The workshop model has five basic parts: Do Now, Direct Instruction (I Do, You Do), Work Time (You Do), Debriefing and Formative Assessment. Over the next few weeks, the Instructional Minute will focus in on 4th and 5th steps of the Workshop Model, Debriefing and Formative Assessment.

Debriefing Debriefing

The Debriefing occurs at the end of the workshop and gives students an opportunity to be metacognitive as they synthesize, reflect on, and name what they have learned for the day (e.g. sharing out, presenting, etc.)

Formative Assessment Formative Assessment

Formative Assessments are instrumental in maximizing student achievement. By consistently monitoring and checking up on students’ academic progress and using a formative assessment process, teachers can correct and minimize the obstacles in students’ paths. Formative assessments are any measures or indicators a teacher uses during a lesson to monitor what students know and do not know. They can be completed in a variety of ways but are often quick and ungraded. An exit ticket is just one example of an effective formative assessment. Formative assessments can be used by both teachers and students as a means to improve learning.

Remember...

Whether learners are struggling, gifted, or in between, they all deserve a year’s worth of growth. When they get two-thirds of each class period to work, the minutes of practice time add up. When there is intentional planning with student work minutes in mind, combined with a teacher checking in and giving targeted feedback, students can’t help but expand their knowledge and increase their skills. By listening to teach instead of talking to teach, students should be just as exhausted as teachers at the end of the day – and just as brilliant!
