🎃 Don't Let Your Worries Haunt You!

With Halloween right around the corner, it's hard not to think about ghosts, goblins, and all things spooky! But sometimes, the things that haunt us aren't ghosts at all. Kids worry about all sorts of things, whether it's school, friendships, trying something new, or making a mistake. While we can't make all of their worries disappear, we can help them learn how to manage them.

A Few Things to Try

Help kids talk about their worries. Sometimes kids know they're worried but have a hard time explaining why. Asking questions like "What part of that feels scary?" can help them put their feelings into words.

Help them look at the bigger picture. Worries have a way of making the worst-case scenario feel like it's definitely going to happen. Help your child think about what they know versus what they're afraid might happen. Sometimes taking a step back can make a worry feel a little less overwhelming.

Remind them that it's okay to feel scared. Being brave doesn't mean never feeling scared. Encourage kids to try things even when they feel a little uncomfortable. Taking small steps can help build confidence and show them that they can handle more than they think.

Try This at Home: What's Haunting You?

Ask your child if there's anything that's been worrying them lately. Have them draw or write down their worry (you can even make it a little ghost!). Then talk through a few questions together:

  • Is this something I know is happening, or something I'm afraid might happen?

  • Is this something I can control?

  • What could I do to help myself feel better?

  • Who can I talk to if I need help?

Remember, the goal isn't to make sure our kids never feel worried or scared. Worry is a normal part of life! We just want to help them learn that they don't have to let their worries take over.

Don't let those worries haunt you!
