November 2025
Welcome Shoremen and Shoregals!
Dear Students, Families, and Staff,
As the leaves continue to fall and Ohio’s crisp autumn air begins to hint at the winter ahead, I want to take a moment to reflect on the season and all that it brings. November is a time of transition, not just in the weather, but in our school year. We are moving from the energetic pace of fall into the steady rhythm that leads us toward winter break. It’s a great time to refocus, reconnect, and recommit to our goals.
While the days may be getting shorter and colder, the spirit within our school remains warm and vibrant. Students are continuing to grow, both academically and personally, and our staff remains deeply committed to helping every learner thrive. I encourage everyone to stay engaged, communicate with staff, attend school events, support one another, and embrace the positive momentum we’ve built so far this year.
With Thanksgiving just around the corner, it’s also a perfect time to express gratitude for our dedicated teachers and staff, supportive families, and the incredible students who make our school community so special. Let’s continue to look out for one another and finish the fall season strong, with kindness, purpose, and pride.
Please visit our high school website, and pay special attention to social media and School Messenger for updates.
Wishing you and your family a safe, joyful, and restful Thanksgiving season.
Regards,
Michael J. May
Principal

Poe Takes Flight in Mrs. Rauschkolb's Classes
Last week, Mrs. Rauschkolb's tenth-grade students delved into Edgar Allan Poe’s classic poem “The Raven.” As part of their literary analysis, students examined the poem’s plot, character development, mood, and central themes. They paid close attention to Poe’s deliberate word choices, exploring how connotation and imagery work together to create the poem’s haunting atmosphere.
To extend their analysis creatively, students each designed a feather illustrating how specific words and phrases contribute to mood and meaning. These individual raven feathers were then combined to form a raven wing mural, now displayed in the hallway outside Room 163.
The project brought Poe’s poem to life and gave students a chance to connect visual art with literary interpretation. Be sure to stop by, admire their work, and snap a photo “as the raven” yourself!

News from the Nurse
*Reminder parents/guardians of 12th grade students*
The Ohio Department of Health requires that *2 doses of MCV4-Meningococcal vaccine be administered before a student enters 12th grade. This vaccine protects against meningitis. If the first dose of MCV4 was administered on or after the 16th birthday, a second dose is not required. Ohio Revised Code (Section 3313.671) requires “exclusion” on the 15th day of school entrance of all pupils who do not meet the above requirements. If you have not done so already, please send in a copy of your child’s immunizations which show that they have received these vaccines. A copy can also be emailed to: Debra.Valadez@alcsoh.org
If you would like more information on meningitis, please use the following link https://www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/
*If you choose to not have your child vaccinated, a waiver form must be completed and be on file. You can print out a waiver form by going to www.avonlakecityschools.org Click “District” on the top menu, select Health news, scroll down under School Medical Forms for the immunization wavier form.
