ONE MORE WEEK OF OCTOBER FUN!
Dear Spring Valley Families,
It's been a great week at SVE!
On Wednesday, October 19th, we will celebrated our first quarter Swamp Rally. In the 3rd-6th grade rally, we were fortunate to have a special guest, Eduardo Nájera, who was the first player from Mexico to be drafted into the NBA. He spoke to our Gators about his story and the secrets of success.
Today we also celebrated Richardson Reads. Guest readers visited classrooms and shared favorite books with students. Our students were wonderful hosts and listeners!
After school today, our students participated in the Richardson High School homecoming parade. Our parade float inspired by the theme "Eagles Got Game" was planned and decorated by our wonderful Spring Valley PTA. If you haven't joined PTA yet, we'd love to have your input for future events. THANK YOU, PTA!!!!
The October fun isn't over yet! Next week is Scholastic Book Fair and Red Ribbon Week. Be sure to scroll down to see more information about these events. Each day next week has a theme that you'll want to participate in. Operation Warm will take place on Tuesday. Every student will receive a new coat for the coming cold weather.
Finally, be sure to come out for our Fall Carnival on October 28. Scroll down for the flyer from PTA and information about how you can help make our carnival a success. We look forward to seeing you there!

CLUBHOUSE CORRAL
RISD Family Engagement is hosting the first-ever Clubhouse Corral next Thursday, October 27 from 6:00-7:30 PM at the Vista Buena Apts. Clubhouse on 13350 Esperanza Rd. All families are welcome to join!
FREE IMMIGRATION HELP
On Saturday, November 12, at 1:30 p.m. Spring Valley will host a free immigration help workshop in our school library. Gloria Granados, executive director for Light of Hope Immigration Law Center, will come and present on demand, just in time information related to juvenile visas, DACA, removal proceedings and representation, citizenship, and much more.
6TH GRADE COGAT TESTING
On November 2, 6th graders will take the CogAT test. The Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) is a multiple-choice assessment that measures reasoning skills with different types of verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal questions. It does not measure achievement, but it does measure cognitive abilities. These abilities include reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative and spatial (non-verbal) methods to find the answers.
OCTOBER DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP FOCUS - DIGITAL SAFETY
October’s Digital Citizenship focus is digital safety. This aligns with October being Cybersecurity Awareness Month. Staying safe in the digital world is just as important as physical safety.
To reinforce staying safe online, we hope you will have a conversation with your student about what they post online, why it matters, and what your family expectations are for posting or sending content, images, and information. Young people often don’t realize that the moment they send or post something, it can never be taken back, even if later deleted. Digital content can be part of their online footprint forever, through screen captures, shares, likes, and retweets.
Other things to consider and discuss as a family to stay safe online:
Using strong passwords that are not easy to guess.
Do not use the same password across a lot of applications.
Never share your username or password.
Check your device (phone, tablet, computer) and app privacy settings.
Pay attention to links and attachments before clicking:
If a link is suspicious, hover over it to see the URL before clicking.
Avoid clicking online surveys from advertisements or people you do not know.
Avoid clicking on links from unknown sources or that you are not expecting.
Update software on personal devices whenever security updates are available.

FALL CARNIVAL - WE NEED VOLUNTEERS!
PTA is looking for volunteers for the Fall Carnival. Check out this SignUp Genius Link for more details.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
VOLUNTEER AT SVE
If you are interested in becoming an RISD volunteer, please sign up through risd.voly.org.
Each year, all volunteers must make sure their contact information is up to date or create a new account if they have never signed up. The process takes about five minutes, and you will be able to customize your volunteer opportunities based on interest and school. All volunteers must complete a background check through the VOLY system.
Volunteer opportunities are available at some schools in classroom support, office support, and cafeteria support.
Needs at each school can change each day, and schools will confirm with volunteers if they are needed on that campus in that area on the day chosen. Please do not go to a school unless you have received a confirmation message from the campus or another RISD representative. If your campus of choice does not need a volunteer in your area of interest, please consider volunteering at a campus with greater needs.

PARENT CORNER - RESOURCES FOR RISD PARENTS
Parents are integral to student success. From working with children at home to actively participating in school and activities, parent involvement provides many positive benefits to a child’s education. Please explore the RISD Parent Corner website to find resources and tools for parents to support their student's educational needs, such as creating a Focus account to view student grades, assignments, and attendance.
One resource on the Digital Tools & Resources page is a link to the Google Family Link app that claims to "help your family create healthy digital habits." The app allows parents to "set digital ground rules to help guide [children] as they learn, play, and explore online." There is also a way for parents to lock a child's cellphone during a specified time, such as the school day.
The Parent Corner site also includes RISD resources, parent education opportunities, and community information, such as ESL classes at Berkner High School.
RISD Adult Education also offers GED classes, ESL classes, paths to career certifications and more through the Network of Community Ministries located at 1500 International Parkway in Richardson. Please use this form to register for these classes at Network.
SETTING UP A PARENT FOCUS ACCOUNT
CAFETERIA AND LUNCH
We will not have any lunch visitors for the first few weeks of school. This will allow us to establish routines and procedures in the cafeteria at the beginning of the year. Specific information regarding lunch visitors will be shared in an upcoming newsletter.
Don't forget to add money to your child's lunch account by logging into paypams.com. For more information about the menu and a la carte prices, you can go to: https://schools.mealviewer.com/school/SpringValleyElementary
