Planning for the Second Semester

The District is hopeful that the educational program in place for your child is working well. The District appreciates all you are doing to support your child's learning. Plans are being refined for the second semester of the school year. As shared in August, the District asks that you to let us know if you are interested in a change to your child's current learning plan. There is no need to communicate if you are not requesting a change.

If you are requesting a change for your child, please keep in mind that there has been no change in the regulations from the State regarding social distancing and safety precautions which restrict the number of students who can be in a classroom at the same time. At this time, we are not able to have every student attend school every day in person. Changes may result in a teacher change for your child. At the secondary level, limited course or section choices may be available. The District will do its best to accommodate requests, but spaces are limited due to the continued need to keep health and safety at the forefront for students and staff during this pandemic.

Please reach out to your child’s principal directly if you would like to explore a change from in-person, remote, or hybrid learning. However, principals need to know by Friday, December 11, 2020 if you are requesting a change for the second semester. There is no need to communicate if you are not requesting a change.

Principals can be reached using the following email addresses:

High School Principal David Roth: david.roth@hflcsd.org

Middle School Principal Shawn Williams: shawn.williams@hflcsd.org
Manor Intermediate School Principal Jeanine Lupisella: jeanine.lupisella@hflcsd.org

Bus Driver Shortage Contingency Plan

For several years school districts across the country have struggled to find bus drivers, and the issue has become more severe during the pandemic. Here at HF-L, the current driver shortage requires that we develop a contingency plan to ensure our ability to provide transportation should we have fewer drivers than routes on any given day. If we have no driver for a route, the morning route will be put on a delay, and a driver will be sent out on that route as soon as they become available. If this situation were to occur and impact your student's bus route, you will receive a call from Transportation and Security Director, Bill Harvey, notifying you that your student's bus is going to be delayed.

If you are called the delay will be 2 hours for the High School, Middle School, Private Parochial, and BOCES programs. The delay will be 1 hour for in-district grades K-5 (Lima and Manor School) students. In the afternoon, the take home routes will run on time by dividing the vacant route up among the other buses serving adjacent neighborhoods.

Please know that this plan will only be used as a last resort. We have operated with a shortage of bus drivers for several years and have always been able to avoid inconveniencing our customers. We assure you that every solution will be deployed before we delay routes. These measures, and this announcement, is just a matter of being well prepared for what could possibly happen.

The Transportation Department continues to use best practices during the pandemic. HF-L bus drivers do their part by limiting their time at the Ops Center to a brief check-in, go right to their bus, and exit in the same quick fashion. They wear a mask while driving students, they follow social distancing rules, and we sanitize and disinfect our buses, regularly. As we head towards much colder weather, we will continue to operate our buses with windows and roof hatches open, set air flow controls on “Fresh-Air”, and run auxiliary fans to maintain a fresh air flow through our buses. Please remind your child to dress appropriately and keep their coat on during the bus ride.

If you’re interested in becoming a bus driver, please stop by the Transportation Office at the Operations Center at 667 Quaker Meeting House Rd., and for more details, visit the Transportation web page at

Local Public Schools to Hold Webcast on Ensuring Safe Facilities During COVID-19: How local districts are setting the “gold standard” for health and safety protocol

During the past few months, Monroe County’s Commissioner of Public Health Dr. Michael Mendoza has suggested that schools could be considered “the gold standard” for providing safe indoor spaces during the pandemic. In its 5th installment of the Public Schools in ACTion webcast series, ACT for Education will ask local engineering experts and district superintendents what they’ve done to earn this high praise. The panel discussion will be broadcast at noon on Thursday, December 3, on the ACT for Education website at ACTforEducation.org.

For this week’s segment, panelists include District Superintendent Dan White, Monroe One BOCES; Superintendent Lori Orologio, Churchville-Chili Central School District; Superintendent Gene Mancuso from Honeoye Falls-Lima Central School District; Mark Esposito, Vice President of Campus Construction Management; and Bruce Knapp, Principal at ME Engineering.

During the webcast, guest panelists will talk about measures districts are taking to keep their buildings safe and healthy for all during COVID-19. Panelists will address frequently asked questions, such as: is it possible for a district to have some buildings in “COVID zones” while other buildings are not; what do the terms MERV 13 and air intake systems really mean; and how will this pandemic influence future usage and design of learning spaces?

All webcasts in this new series are pre-recorded within 48 hours of the broadcast, then streamed on ACTforEducation.org. Though the webcast is pre-recorded, questions can be submitted through the

live chat feature during the noon livestream. The webcast is free and open to the public; no prior registration is required.

All webcasts are archived on the ACT for Education website for future viewing. Links to each district’s individual reopening plans are also available on the ACT for Education webcast page.

For more information about the webcast series or this initiative, please visit ACTforEducation.org.
