Spelling Bee
Congratulations to Maya, Tiaraa, Tushig, Frank, Sophie, and Carter, who qualified for this year’s Spelling Bee! 🎉
The Spelling Bee will take place in the Heritage Gym on January 15, 2026. A letter was sent home on November 5 with event details, including dates for practice meetings that qualifiers are encouraged to attend.
If your child chooses to participate, please use the QR code on the back of the letter to register. If your child chooses not to participate, please be sure to use the QR code on the back of the letter to let us know, as well.
We are so proud of our amazing spellers—way to go!
Thanksgiving Lunch at Heritage
We are excited to welcome families to join us for our annual Heritage Thanksgiving Lunch on Tuesday, November 19, during 5th-grade lunch time (12:25-12:45)!
A traditional Thanksgiving meal—including turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, and more—will be served for students only, but families are welcome to bring their own lunch to enjoy alongside their child.
No RSVP is needed—just come on by!
After lunch, be sure to swing through our Scholastic Book Fair for some holiday shopping!
We can’t wait to celebrate together. 🦃
What We Are Learning
We had a blast getting sorted into our Hogwarts Houses this morning! Be sure to ask your child which house they were sorted into!
Reading
We’ve jumped into our Wonders folktale unit and are exploring the elements that make these stories timeless—such as characters, lessons, and magical events. Students are practicing identifying theme and using text evidence to make strong inferences about what the author is trying to show us.
As a class read-aloud, we are enjoying the original Brothers Grimm fairy tales—the kids are loving the darker, twisty versions of the stories they only thought they knew!
Math
We are currently working on long division. Students are learning how to divide whole numbers with up to four digits by two-digit divisors and how to interpret remainders depending on the situation (Colorado 5th-grade standard).
We are also practicing how to:
-
Use different strategies to solve division problems (standard algorithm, area model, and repeated subtraction)
-
Check answers using multiplication
-
Explain their thinking using math vocabulary
-
Apply division to real-world word problems
We will continue building confidence and accuracy as we move forward!
Writing
In writing, we are crafting narrative stories about a science-fair experiment gone wrong—students accidentally create a monster in a jar, and when it escapes, chaos erupts! Their characters must work through several attempts and setbacks in order to solve the problem and get the monster back into its jar.
As we write, students are focusing on key components of a strong narrative:
-
A clear introduction that sets the scene
-
Characters, setting, and a developing plot
-
A problem with multiple attempts to solve it
-
Sensory details and dialogue to bring events to life
-
A resolution that wraps up the story
We can’t wait to see where each student’s monster adventure leads!
Social Studies/Science
We’ve kicked off our fist science unit—Web of Life! Students will explore how plants, animals, and decomposers are all connected through food chains and ecosystems. We’ll learn how energy moves from the sun to producers (like plants) and then to consumers and decomposers, keeping the entire ecosystem in balance.
Throughout this unit, we’ll be investigating what happens when parts of a system change—like if one species disappears or if a new organism is introduced. These hands-on lessons tie directly to our 5th grade Colorado Life Science standards, which focus on understanding how energy flows through ecosystems and how living things depend on one another to survive.
Students will be building models, making observations, and working together to explain how every living thing—big or small—plays an important role in our web of life!
