The Lion's Roar
SEPTEMBER 2026
Oak Hills Families,
The first few weeks of the school year are in the books. I want to express my appreciation for your continued support and involvement at Oak Hills. September brings an exciting lineup of activities, including football and volleyball games, cross country meets, choir and band concerts, and our various clubs/organization are beginning to kick off. These events provide wonderful opportunities for our students to showcase their talents and dedication, and we encourage you to join us in cheering them on and investing in ways to enrich your student's junior high experience. Stay tuned for more details on upcoming events and how you can get involved. Thank you for being a vital part of our school family!
Be Lion Bold!

Montgomery ISD is exploring the interest level in an At-Home Learning Option to determine whether the District should pursue this opportunity for students and families.
We want your input. The survey will help us understand the level of interest and what would be most important to families, from academics and scheduling to athletics, extracurricular activities, and hands-on learning opportunities.
The survey is open to MISD families and community members, including those who live outside the MISD attendance boundaries.

Each year, during the week that includes September 17th, Texas schools honor 'Celebrate Freedom Week' to highlight the values and ideals on which the United States was founded as well as the sacrifices that were made for freedom in the founding of the country. Students learn about the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Students also examine the relationship between the ideas in these documents and subsequent American history.
Celebrate Freedom Week coincides with Constitution Week, established by the U.S. Congress to encourage all Americans to learn about the Constitution. Both Celebrate Freedom Week and Constitution Week focus on September 17, the date in 1787 when delegates to the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. Congress has also designated September 17 of each year as Constitution Day.
See You at the Pole™ began in 1990 as a grass roots movement with ten students praying at their school. Decades later, millions pray on their campuses on the fourth Wednesday in September.
See You at the Pole™ is an event where students meet at the school flagpole before school begins to lift up their friends, families, teachers, school, and nation in prayer. See You at the Pole™ is a student-initiated, student-organized, and student-led event.

COUNSELOR'S CORNER
PARENTING WITH FRIENDSHIP
By the time our students hit middle school, it is all but guaranteed that they will have learned a lot of lessons about friendship. Some of our kids are great at making friends, and others struggle to meet new people or to open up and trust other young people. No matter their personality, building and keeping friendships is a huge part of their development.
As a parent, it can be really tough to know how to deal with the issues that arise around friendships and relationships. To our children, these relationships mean so much, and when they run into trouble (which they will), it can feel so devastating. Finding other supportive parents, listening to podcasts, reading books, and seeking the advice of other adults who know your child well can help when the going gets tough.
Relationships are hard... for adults and students alike. Building healthy friendships in middle school will positively impact our children’s relationships for the rest of their lives.
Questions for parents to consider:
• Who do you consider your closest friends? Why?
• What was it like for you making friends when you were your child’s age?
• How do you make friends now?
Questions to ask your child:
• What are the qualities you look for most in a friend?
• How do your current friends show those traits?
• How can I support your friendships?
What should I do when I see you making bad choices in a relationship?
How do you want me to address that with you?
THE CLINIC CHRONICLE
Welcome back, Lion families!
The school clinic is here to support students and help keep them healthy, safe, and ready to learn.
Healthy Habits: Regular handwashing, nutritious meals, physical activity, and plenty of sleep can help students stay healthy and focused.
Hydration Matters: Encourage your student to bring a refillable water bottle and drink plenty of water throughout the school day.
Health Updates: Please notify the school nurse of any new diagnoses, allergies, injuries, surgeries, or changes in your child’s health or medications.
Emergency Contacts: Make sure phone numbers and emergency contact information are current so we can reach you quickly if your child becomes ill or injured.
Immunizations: Please make sure all required immunizations and health records are up to date and submitted to the school.
- If your student has an exemption, the original affidavit must be submitted to the clinic (copies cannot be accepted).
Immunization Requirements for 7th Grade:
- Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis) Vaccine (within the last 5 years)
- Meningococcal Vaccine
Medication at School: All medications must be brought to the clinic by a parent/guardian and follow school medication guidelines. Students should not carry medication unless specifically authorized. https://www.misd.org/departments/health_services
Vision & Hearing: Required student screenings will be completed during the school year. Parents/guardians will be contacted if follow-up is recommended.
Extra Clothes: Accidents happen—even in junior high! Keeping a change of clothes in your student’s backpack or gym locker can be helpful.
Questions or Concerns? Please contact Nurse Williams at Kelly.Williams@misd.org or Camryn.Muston@misd.org (Clinic Aide) with any health-related questions or concerns. We’re looking forward to a healthy school year!

Here are a few tips to consider:
● Have your student arrive at school on time and attend every class period, especially the official attendance-taking period (9:15 AM JH and HS).
● A student who is tardy to class will be subject to the consequences established at each campus in accordance with the possible consequences in the MISD Student Code of Conduct.
● What happens if your student needs to see a doctor/dentist/therapist? If possible, we encourage you to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Obtain and submit a medical note for documentation to provide to your student’s Campus Attendance Specialist. Documentation is needed so the absence will be coded correctly.
● When you receive an absence notification, please follow up with your student and the campus attendance specialist. If you have documentation for your student’s absence, please submit as early as possible (it is recommended to submit within 48 hours). If you believe a teacher has marked a student incorrectly, please have your student reach out to the teacher of the marked period.
