Use for Personal Devices in Schools — Reminders and Exam Implications
With the beginning of a new semester, we wanted to remind students and families that personal mobile devices are not to be used during instructional time. As per Ministerial Order (#014/2024) this includes any device that can be used to communicate with or access the internet, such as a cellphone, tablet, laptop, smartwatch. Students and families should be aware that AI assistive technology such as AI glasses are also considered a personal mobile device and are not permitted during instructional/exam time. Teachers and administration can however, permit the use of devices such as laptops for designated educational purposes during instructional time.
Further, students should be aware that SCS adheres to the Alberta Education diploma and PAT exam standards. As such, during any assessment, students with a personal device on their person will have their score invalidated. As such, students should be proactive to keep their personal devices stored in their locker or outside of the writing space during any assessment that takes place at school.
Acts of plagiarism, cheating, and repeated incidents of personal device use in an exam space may lead to further consequences including suspension.
If you have any questions regarding the use of personal devices during instructional/exam time, please reach out to school administration.
Important Update: Bring Your Own Device Changes
Beginning in the 2026–27 school year, our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) program will be discontinued. This means families will no longer be required to provide a personal device for their child in grades 9–12.
This change comes as Elk Island Public Schools introduces a new technology fee as part of standard school fees. This fee will support the purchase and maintenance of school‑owned devices for student use including the addition of several Chromebook carts for classrooms. In addition, provincial exam requirements now call for secure browsers that can only be installed and managed on division‑owned hardware. Transitioning away from BYOD ensures all students have access to devices that meet these standards.
Since its introduction in 2012, BYOD has been a successful and valuable part of our programming, and we appreciate the support families have shown over the years. We are confident this new approach will continue to provide students with reliable access to the tools they need for learning. If a student chooses to bring their own device to school, they may be permitted to use it for some non-summative learning activities.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Johnson directly.

FROM EIPS
Returning Student Registration for 2026-27
The Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) returning student registration process for 2026-27 takes place Feb. 9-23, 2026. Through the online form, families will confirm the school and program their child will attend next year or advise the Division if they aren’t returning. For students who want to attend a non-designated school next year, these requests must be submitted through the returning student registration process—acceptance is based on available space.
On February 9, the parent/guardian on file in PowerSchool identified as the Permission Click contact for each student will receive an email through Permission Click with a link to the form. If your family hasn’t received any Permission Click forms this school year, contact the school office so we can investigate any technical issues before registration season.
Fee Waiver Application Deadline
If circumstances exist where you’re unable to pay school or transportation fees, you can apply to have fees waived by submitting an Application for a Waiver of Fees. The application deadline is Feb. 13, 2026. If you’re new to the Division, the deadline is the latter of Feb. 13, 2026, or 45 days after registration.
To access your fee information, simply log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal and go to “Student Fees.” There you can view your fees and pay them online using Visa or MasterCard. All fees are due within 30 days of being posted.
Don’t forget to also log in to the PowerSchool Parent Portal regularly throughout the year. Fees are often added to your child’s account to cover the cost of various school activities such as field trips, class projects, extracurricular activities and more.
For more information about school fees, waivers and payment deadlines, visit www.eips.ca/schools/fees and www.scasecondary.ca/about/fees. Alternatively, contact Jennifer Gibson, Business Manager at SCA Secondary at 780-464-7127.
Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance Survey
The Alberta Education and Childcare Assurance (AECA) annual survey for students and their parents or guardians is available now. The AECA survey gathers feedback on the quality of education provided by school authorities and their schools. Schools and school authorities use this information to understand how they should plan for the future. The survey is intended for parents of students in grades 4, 7 and 10. In some schools, all parents of students in Grade 4 and above will be surveyed.
The survey is open until March 6. Schools will provide the random-access code applicable families will need to complete the survey. If you have more than one student in the grades being surveyed, you’ll receive a survey package and separate random-access code for each student.
Inclement Weather
With the winter season upon us, the school has a few reminders for families:
- Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions.
- If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, and posts updates on social media and eips.ca.
- Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.” Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.
- When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.
