What is...Halloween? by Olivia Levesque What is...Halloween? by Olivia Levesque

Halloween started in Ireland and Britain when the land belonged to the Celts. They celebrated a holiday on November 1 and the festival began on October 31. This festival was called Samhain. When the Romans conquered the land, they merged their holidays and October 31 became "All Hallows Eve", which was eventually shortened to what we now call "Halloween." People would go door to door to ask for food and eventually began dressing up and carving faces into various squash. This all eventually turned into trick or treating and carving pumpkins. When the Irish and Scottish began to move to America, they brought these traditions with them. Slowly it evolved and during the 1950s it became the popular, kid-centered holiday that it is today. Do you celebrate Halloween? If so, what do you do?

HALLOWEEN by Josehf Lloyd Murchison

Beneath the moon and the stars so bright! Hideous creatures born of the night.

Their screams of horror and wailing fear, for we are coming and we are here.

These fleeting spirits take dark winged flight, calling to the heavens spreading fright.

They are ghosts, goblins, banshees, and more, hordes will come and pound upon your door.

And if you dare to open it wide, welcome these spirits to step inside.

With bags held open each girl and boy, chime trick or treat with smiles filled with joy.

All hallows eve has come it is hear, with children laughing and children's cheer.
