COUNSELORS CORNER

October is Bullying Prevention Month, and we will be teaching kids all about what bullying is and what they can do to prevent bullying. It is important to distinguish the difference between rude, mean, and bullying behaviors because not everything is Bullying. On Wednesday October 16, 2024, we will be observing Unity Day. Unity Day is a day to show support for kindness, inclusion, acceptance, and to prevent bullying. We ask that on that day all students and staff wear orange as the color orange is associated with safety, visibility, and warmth. Parents, please talk to your children about the importance of showing respect for everyone and to always look for ways to be kind and helpful as this is the best way to prevent rude, mean, and bullying behaviors. Watch the video with your children to learn more about Unity Day. https://youtu.be/8gKBQEQUW5g

Let’s look at the difference between mean, rude, and bullying behaviors and how both school personnel and parents can help students understand how all three are different.

Rude- Accidentally saying or doing something that hurts feelings or embarrasses someone. Also, inconsiderate thoughtless, unplanned behavior, bad manners, only thinking about yourself, not meant to actually hurt anyone. EXAMPLES may include burping, coughing, sneezing on others, bragging about the highest grade, cutting in line, horseplay, being disrespectful, getting in personal space.

Mean-Saying or doing something on purpose to hurt someone maybe ONCE or TWICE. Sometimes said in anger to make someone else look bad, we usually feel regret later. EXAMPLES: criticizing or making fun someone’s clothes, looks, intelligence, skin, language, breaking or stealing others belongings.

Bullying- Behavior that is on purpose, REPEATED over time and involves an imbalance of power. 4 types of Bullying: Physical: actions that hurt your body. Verbal: words that hurt your feelings. Friendship: words/actions that hurt your friendships, using a friendship or threatening to take friendship away. Cyberbullying: intentional, repeated harmful behavior using a device and technology (apps, websites, social media).
