Lions Club Speech Contest Lions Club Speech Contest

On Wednesday, February 26, the Akron Lions Club held its 3rd annual speech contest. The competition was limited to eight participants, all from Mrs. Brent's English class, where preparing a speech was incorporated as an assignment.

This year’s contest was incredibly close, with the top three competitors separated by just one point each after the judges’ scores were totaled. The winner, Arcie Lavato, received a $50 cash prize and an invitation to compete at the District Lions Convention. Drake Ritter secured second place, earning a $20 cash prize, while Merrick Ashby claimed a very close third place deserving an honorable mention. All participating students did an excellent job and were rewarded with $10 in Chamber Bucks for their time and effort.

A big thank you to all the students who participated and to our outstanding panel of judges: Lion Joe Tarnow, former Lion and English teacher Jim Thompson, Bethany Brent, and Kelli McCaffrey. Special thanks also to Mrs. Brent for incorporating the speech contest into her English curriculum and supporting the competition.

FFA FFA

The Ag I and Ag II students presented Food For America lessons to the elementary students. The goal is to help students create a connection with agriculture and the FFA. We had a great day of learning and presenting.

Building Trades Building Trades

The Building Trades class teamed up with the Department of Human Services to build a bench featuring a Free Little Library. The covered book bin allows for people to take a book, and leave a book they have enjoyed with hopes of someone else doing the same.

Denver Mint Tour Denver Mint Tour

On Thursday, Mrs. Quick and her economics class took a tour of the Denver Mint. Students were shown how pennies are produced on the line, security methods that include tear gas falling from the ceiling, new designs for a DC comic character line and new quarters celebrating famous women. The most exciting part was seeing 3 million dollars worth of 27 lb gold bricks.

Preschool Preschool

Our preschool room has been using their thinking caps this week! They are learning about letter sounds and continuing their ball study. The preschoolers were in the hallway playing sound kickball. Students kicked the ball to knock over as many cups as they could, then they had to identify the letter and sounds it makes. They have also had various visitors come to the classroom each teaching them about different balls including baseball, basketball, and volleyball.

Sports Announcing Sports Announcing

If you've tuned in to catch Akron High School basketball games on Stormy Sports, you've heard the young voice play-by-plays, but who are those voices?

Tuck Kneedler and Aydan Koch sound more like seasoned veterans than 11-year-old sports loving boys. Kneedler, Akron fifth grader and Koch, Akron sixth grader, are getting a jump start on their dream jobs of becoming sports broadcasters. While both boys play football, basketball and baseball, they both say basketball is their favorite making their broadcasting job easy.

Prior to game time, Mr. Schoenecker sets up the electric camera, which follows the action on its own and allows the boys to use his headsets. Mr. Schoenecker pulls the stats for both boys and girls varsity, as well as their opponent for the evening and the boys review it during the junior varsity game. And just like that they are ready for the evening broadcast.

Just like any live sporting event, the boys must be quick thinking to keep up with the action. The most difficult part, they say, are some of the name pronunciation.
