Dear Parents and Carers,

The bitter chill of winter is upon us. I am very happy to see so many students rugged up in their jumpers, jackets and tracksuit pants.

This week is Refugee Week in Australia. The theme for 2025 is "Finding Freedom: Diversity in Community". This theme highlights the importance of inclusive communities in supporting refugees and emphasises that freedom encompasses belonging, dignity, and the opportunity to thrive. Refugee Week 2025 is held from Sunday, June 15 to Saturday, June 21, 2025. Two of the Cartwright Public School leadership team (Ana Ampevska and Aakash Soorajkumar) travelled with me on Wednesday to Miller Technology High School to participate with local schools participating in their traditional tree planting ceremony. The CPS leaders wrote their wishes for all refugees on leaves that were symbolically dropped into the ground when the fruit tree was planted.

On the same day the 2168 Children’s Parliament sitting took place at Liverpool Council. Mrs. Vili joined the session with student leaders from local schools from within the 2168 postcode. Among them, Qamar Jabr from 5/6 Jade, a passionate advocate from Cartwright PS presented a speech targeting our need for a Children’s Crossing Supervisor, especially in the afternoons. The speech included survey results that were relayed to the Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun, Liverpool MP Charishma Kaliyanda as well as NSW DoE Directors Nick Magriplis and Peter Rouse. As you may be aware I have applied for a Crossing Supervisor in previous years but have been informed that our school does not qualify. As a 2168 Student Parliamentarian, Qamar is calling for greater road safety for our students. Charishma Kaliyanda MP has backed her in launching a petition to upgrade the school crossing.

Finally, I would like to remind parent and carers that reports will be going home with students in week 10. Parent teacher interviews will take place in early term 3 as in previous years.

I also want to relay to the school community that I am on Long Service Leave in week 10 and Mr. Eastman (DP Inclusion and Support) will be Relieving Principal for that time. Mr. Eastman’s DP office is situated in the CPS Support Unit. If you would like to speak with him, please contact the front office. Thanking you for your ongoing support.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth Harris

Aqua Aqua

This term, Aqua students have been exploring living things as part of their Science learning. They’ve enjoyed getting hands-on by planting and growing their own seeds, discovering what plants need to grow and thrive. In addition to learning about plants, students have also been investigating the life cycles of animals and have taken their curiosity outdoors by searching for living things in our school garden.

To enrich their learning, we integrated Visual Arts by using oil pastels to create vibrant sunflower artworks, inspired by Vincent Van Gogh and cornflower artworks, inspired by Margaret Olley. It’s been a wonderful way to combine creativity with curiosity about the natural world.

Violet Violet

Violet has enjoyed participating in various activities in term 2. These include Zing Active athletics, library, home sport, learning activities in class and some special group activities with our peers in the Support Unit. All students are developing their individual social skills and learning to use their words to communicate their ideas and wants with their peers, learning to share equipment, stationery and space in our classroom. Students are learning to work together as a team and help each other when needed. Great job Violet!!

1/2 Green 1/2 Green

We are almost to the end of Term 2 and 1/2 Green have been learning so much! We have continued to learn about narratives and how authors and illustrators use word choice and pictures to convey a character’s personality and to make the reader feel a particular way. We have been enjoying ‘buddy reading’ within the class where students read to each other to build their fluency and expression.

In Maths, we have been completing our ‘Daily Number Routine’, practicing number recognition, counting, place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The class have improved throughout the term and are becoming clever mathematicians.

We have also enjoyed whole school events such as World Environment Day and participating in weekly athletics sessions. We look forward to the rest of the term!
