The IB Diploma Program is the most rigorous academic program available to our students and the benefits can be seen for years beyond high school graduation. This study examined the difference in acceptance into the top 25 schools to show how IB students are accepted at a higher percentage across the board.

A presenter came in to speak to students about UMBC's Upward Bound program where students receive tutoring, SAT prep classes, college visits, and more at no cost to families. The program is open to first generation college bound students as well as families within the income requirements.

They also offer a summer program where students can live on campus for 5 weeks in the summer to take college classes and experience dorm life. For more information check out their website. See Ms. L. Williams if you have questions.

Ms. Franklin our College and Career Counselor came in to speak to grade 11 students about their college search as well as the scholarship search. She showed us how to find scholarships that are available to them now as well as to bookmark and save scholarships that they will qualify for next year. All students who are working towards the IB Diploma must complete CAS. They work on reflection in the areas of Creativity, Activity, and Service over 18 months and must also complete one project. Yeily completed her project in October and was able to build dog houses with her family to raise over $450 for BARCS animal shelters.

One way to support your IB DP grade 11 and 12 student is to ask them what they did this week for CAS? Help them to reflect on what they are doing that is creative like cooking or art, active like sports or exercise, and service related like donating items.

As a Student Leader, you will participate in an eight-week paid internship at a local nonprofit organization where you will learn first-hand about the needs of your community and the critical role nonprofits play. In addition, you will learn valuable civic, social and business leadership skills. Each Student Leader will attend the Student Leaders Summit held in Washington, D.C. where you will learn how government, business and the nonprofit sector work together to address critical community needs. Note: in-person events will be in line with local and national guidelines around gatherings and travel and may be subject to change.
