Things to Know:

Natick Foodservice is Seeking Feedback:

We are running a student survey until 10/31 to receive feedback. I was hoping this could be included in the newsletters that get sent home to parents to get some participation from the elementary level. Our direct link is below and I attached a flier with a QR code! Any assistance is appreciated!

Student Viewpoint Survey! Student ViewPoint is open thru Friday October 31st. Now is your chance to participate in a short survey to gather feedback on the school lunch and breakfast program!

Whole School Assembly

We hosted our second whole school assembly. Our focus was on COMPOSTING. As of yesterday, our students compost at lunch. This aligns with our core values of accountability and making our world a better place. We appreciate the help and support form Amber Keller in getting this program up and running. Here are a few highlights:

  • Kennedy Middle School Green Club students helped launch waste sorting at Kennedy last year. Many of the Green Club students are Memorial Elementary alums, and they were thrilled to have the opportunity to teach Memorial Elementary students about the importance of waste sorting.
  • Before waste sorting, the Memorial cafeteria generated 15-16 bags of trash weighing 150 pounds per day. With waste sorting, we're down to 2 trash bags per day weighing 25 pounds. With waste sorting, Memorial is expecting to see an 83% reduction in the amount of cafeteria waste we send to the incinerator.
  • Cafeteria waste sorting allows us to capture food waste and our certified compostable trays in a bin that Black Earth Compost picks up and makes into compost.
  • Memorial joins Lilja Elementary, Bennett Hemenway Elementary, Wilson Middle School, and Kennedy Middle School in sorting waste at lunchtime.
  • Students are learning and applying the curriculum state standard that changes in our practices can make a positive impact on the environment.

Renaissance Learning Update For 2025-2026 School Year

Over the last couple of weeks, students have participated in reading and math assessments through our universal screener, Renaissance Learning. These quick assessments help us identify areas of need and strength, monitor learning progress and design instruction to help every student grow. These reports will be sent home next week. Here is more information to help interpret these reports:

Memorial School Spirit Parade on October 31:

We are excited to continue the tradition of a Spirit Day parade on Friday, October 31, at 9:15 am. Kindergarten students parade outside for the whole school. Grade one through four, staff and faculty are invited to wear a costume as spirited spectators. This event is optional, and no one is required to participate. Also, kindergarten students can parade, with or without a costume.

If your student will participate, there are specific guidelines we ask everyone to follow. Common sense and good judgment are essential guides to ensure a safe and positive experience for all our students. Please make sure your costumes meet the following guidelines. If you have any questions, please contact me. Let’s figure out the answers to the questions before our parade.

Guidelines for a fun and inclusive Spirit Day Parade:

  • Think about the safety of yourself and others during and after school. This includes emotional safety and respect for other students. Students are not permitted to wear costumes that poke fun at another person or group. If you worry that your costume may be offensive, it probably is and may not be worn.

  • Costumes may not compromise the health or safety of anyone.

  • Costumes may not present any reference to drugs or alcohol and may not include toys or replica weapons. Please leave props at home.

  • Costumes may not display inappropriate language, pictures, or hold/imply connotation or double meaning.

  • Costumes may not incorporate methods of transportation such as rollerblades, wagons, or skateboards (safety).

  • Costumes may not depict any inappropriate character designed to cause discomfort for members (s) of the school community (think age-appropriate characters - not characters from R-rated movies, etc).

  • Students who wear masks or headgear that covers their faces during the parade must be able to move safely and confidently with the mask on.

If you have questions about a costume, contact me. I have the final say about the appropriateness and safety of any costume at Memorial. I am happy to answer specific questions and want to do this before October 31.
