Encouraging Critical Thinking in Children

Critical thinking is one of the most valuable skills children can develop in today's fast-paced, information-rich world. It’s about more than just answering questions—it’s about asking the right questions, evaluating information, and making thoughtful decisions. As parents, you play a crucial role in helping your child develop this important skill, and there are simple, fun activities you can incorporate into daily life.

Activity: "What if?" Scenario Game

One enjoyable way to foster critical thinking is by engaging your child in the "What if?" scenario game. This encourages imaginative thinking and problem-solving. Here’s how you can do it:

  1. Present a fun "What if?" scenario: “What if you could talk to animals for a day? What would you ask them?”
  2. Encourage your child to think critically about the scenario—how would they solve a problem, interact with animals, or use their newfound abilities?
  3. Prompt them with follow-up questions: “Why do you think that’s the best solution?” or “What other ideas could work?”

This exercise stimulates creativity and helps children learn to look at situations from different angles. It’s also a great bonding activity!

"The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing."

– Albert Einstein

This quote reminds us that critical thinking begins with curiosity. By helping children embrace their natural curiosity and encouraging them to explore, question, and analyze, we are nurturing future problem solvers and innovators.

Encourage your child to ask questions, even when they might seem simple or silly. Answering their questions thoughtfully helps develop their analytical skills and boosts their confidence in using their own reasoning abilities.

Together, we can help our kids build the foundation for a future of thoughtful, independent decision-making! Below is another fun activity/experiment with a little holiday twist to it!

Here’s a simple holiday-themed experiment that you can do to spark your kiddos curiosity and critical thinking. Start by generating predictions.

Ask: What do you think will happen if you put a candy cane in water? What about vinegar or oil? Then do the experiment to test the predictions. Note: You can also use red-and-white peppermint candies to cut down on the amount of liquid needed to cover the candy in this experiment.

Supplies You’ll Need:

3 candy canes

Water at room temperature

Vinegar

Vegetable Oil

3 clear cups

Timer

Step 1:
Place one candy cane in each cup.
Step 2:
Fill each cup with equal amounts of water, vinegar, and oil.
Step 3:
Make a prediction: Which liquid will dissolve the candy cane the quickest?
Step 4:
Start a timer. Describe what is happening to each candy cane after five minutes.
Step 5:
Examine the candy canes after 20 minutes. Describe what happened.

Tell your kiddo(s) that candy canes are made up mostly of sugar. Sugar dissolves in water. It will also dissolve in vinegar, but a bit more slowly. Oil, as you can see, does not dissolve sugar as easily.

Ask: What if we put the candy cane in hot water? Would the candy cane dissolve quicker or slower in hot water than room temperature water? Test the prediction as a family.
