Pink Week Information - Pink Week Shirts and Sponsorship Opportunities

Pink Week Shirts

  • As many of you know who have experienced it, Pink Week is one of the best weeks of the year at BHS! Our entire school and the Brighton community come together through both school and community-wide events to raise money for the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton. More information will be coming out as the week gets closer. We appreciate any and all support this week as it is a fantastic opportunity to raise money for a great cause and to keep funds local! We also have shirts available for purchase via the BHS school store, The Paw.

  • Due to overwhelming support, shirt sizes available online are limited, however, only a portion of the inventory was made available online for purchase. We do, however, have inventory available for in-person purchase is sizes that are not showing as available online. Your student will be able to purchase items directly from The Paw starting on 9/22 during all lunches.

  • Online orders will be available for pick up at BHS (or delivery to BAS employees) starting on 9/22/25. As always, 100% of proceeds generated by The Paw from Pink Week items will go toward BAS' donation to the Trinity Health Cancer Center in Brighton.

Pink Week Sponsorship Opportunities

  • In addition to participating in BHS' Pink Week events, we are also offering businesses the opportunity to serve as Pink Week Sponsors or make donations to our Pink Week Raffle. If you or someone you know may be interested in participating in either of these opportunities to support a great cause, feel free to share our Pink Week Sponsorship and Donation Flyer.

Advisory Period Update - Traveling and Testing

Students' Advisory Period has moved to after 2nd Hour. The new schedule is provided here. All students received an email from Mrs. Richards on Friday updating students on any specifics as it related to traveling to other classes during Advisory or testing. The contents of this message is included below so that you have access to the same information:

Hi BHS Students,

We hope that your first Advisory class went well this week! Beginning on Wednesday, September 24th, students will be able to start traveling during Advisory. Students may travel for the following reasons:

  • academic support from another teacher
  • to make-up a test or quiz in either a teacher's classroom or Media Center (must be pre-arranged by the teacher you are making up the test/quiz for
  • for social/emotional/academic support with Counseling.
  • you may NOT request to visit a teacher to be social with friends in that class.

It is VERY important that you follow the correct procedures when traveling. Please see below:

Advisory Traveling Reminders

1. Meet with the teacher you want to visit for Advisory BEFORE Advisory to receive a PASS. This must occur NO LATER THAN TUESDAY!

  • Keep in mind that the teacher you are visiting can only have so many students in their room, so the sooner the better.
  • The teacher you are requesting to visit has the right to deny your request.
  • Do NOT email your teacher on Advisory Day asking them to visit their class - this is last-minute and they may not see your email. You need to be proactive and plan accordingly!

2. On Advisory Day, EMAIL your Advisory teacher and CC your visiting teacher using the suggested email etiquette below when you arrive in that room:

Dear Mrs. (Advisory Teacher’s name),

I am visiting Mr. (Visiting Teacher’s name) room for Advisory today. Mr. (Visiting Teacher) can confirm that I am in his room for attendance. Thank you!

Sincerely,

(Student’s Name)

3. Sign-in with your visiting teacher’s class to document your visit.

Failure to follow these procedures may result in getting marked unexcused absent/skipping, an administratively assigned detention, and/or revoking your ability to travel in the future.

If you have any questions, please contact your Grade Level Principal.

-Mr. Evans, Mr. Grabowski, Mrs. Napuli, and Mrs. Richards

BHS Attendance Policy

We have received a few questions about our attendance policy and if it is new or if there have been changes. Students actually have the ability to miss 1 more day than they have been able to previously. However, if students exceed the allowable number of absences, there may be additional steps that a student may need to participate in to earn credit for the grading period. As always, we will work with you/your student if there are extenuating circumstances, but our goal is to have students in front of their teachers as much as possible as we know it increases the likelihood of their success. The full BHS Attendance Policy is outlined below:

Absences:

Each semester, students will be allowed 9 absences. When the absence is excused, the student will be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests without penalty. If the absence is unexcused, the student will not be able to make up missed work/assignments/tests. Once a student reaches 10 absences (excused or unexcused), he/she may enter into a “loss of credit” status. The student will continue to attend class and work towards academic success. If there are no additional absences, the “loss of credit” status may revert back into course credit with the earned grade. In cases of continued but limited excused absences, the student will have the opportunity to appeal the “loss of credit” status, presenting evidence of extenuating circumstances, and possibly have credit reinstated to their grade level principal.

Please note: Excused absences that WILL NOT count in the (9) day limitation are those for documented medical and court appointments, religious observances, funerals, and those for school business and suspensions.

Per Board Policy 5301, the Building Principal or designee may impose additional consequences for excessive absenteeism, consistent with the student handbook or published grading procedures.

Absentee reports will be run by Administration at progress reports and marking periods throughout the school year. Based on those reports, the following will take place.

*Note: 10 or more absences per semester, student enters a loss of credit status (NC). Every 5 tardies = 1 absence.

** Appeal process goes to the Grade Level Principal for potential credit reinstatement.

Tardies:

Students are allowed 3 tardies per semester without a disciplinary referral. Once a student hits the 4th tardy, they will be sent to their Grade Level Principal for a student conference. The next offense will result in making up time during an after school detention. Multiple offenses will escalate the student discipline. A parent phone call does NOT excuse a tardy.

Digital Readiness Check and PSAT 11 Info - Includes General and BHS-specific Information

We know the school year just started, but the PSAT for our current Juniors is coming quick this year! The information included below are the basics for what you need to know for planning purposes:

  • Juniors will take the PSAT on Wednesday, October 8th this year in the morning. BHS-specific Information on this PSAT test for our Juniors can be found here.
  • PSAT Testing will take place in the Aux Gym and Fieldhouse (just like this past year). All other students will attend class as they normally would.
  • Prior to taking the PSAT, all Juniors are required to complete a Digital Readiness Check. This will be done during Advisory on Wednesday, October 1st. The schedule for where students will be completing their Digital Readiness Check will come out as the date gets closer.

The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) is structured similarly to the SAT and is a wonderful practice before the spring SAT. It has the same sections and timing, and measures the Reading and Writing and Math skills needed to succeed in college and career. Attached is the PSAT Student Guide with some practice tips and information on scholarships.

Standardized Testing Guidelines

More information will be coming out each time we prepare for standardized testing. However, in preparation for this year's standardized testing (includes PSAT, SAT, and AP Testing) we wanted to make sure everyone is on the same page regarding restrictions in place so students can plan accordingly.

Important Information Regarding Prohibited Devices:

For test security, the following items are not allowed during testing or during breaks once an exam begins:

  • Cell phones

  • Smart watches

  • Fitness bands

  • Air pods or any other brand of wired or wireless headphones

  • Any other wearable electronic device

If brought into the room, these items must be powered off and will be stored with a proctor for the duration of the exam (unless there is a documented accommodation on file for medical purposes).

If a student accesses any of the prohibited devices after the test begins, regardless of if they are inside or outside the testing room and even during breaks, the student will be dismissed from testing. An irregularity report will also be filed with the testing agency, the room’s entire scores could be cancelled, and the student’s device may be confiscated as a part of the test investigation.

These guidelines also pertain to any national tests taken at BHS as part of our Saturday testing options available to our students.

October is Michigan College Month!

Michigan College Month is part of the American College Application Campaign, a national initiative with the goal to provide every graduating high school senior the opportunity to apply to college and for financial aid. Special focus is placed on assisting students who would be the first in their families to attend college and students who may not have otherwise seriously considered applying to college. Michigan College Month emphasizes the relationship between applying to and paying for college and helps break down some of the most complex and commonly cited barriers to attending college.

We will have different events going on in October in promotion of Michigan College Month, but also have some resources to share as well. In addition to the student resources already linked, additional resources on fee-free applications/application fee waivers are provided below:

  • Michigan Colleges with No Application Fees
  • Michigan Colleges with Waived Application Fees in October

For students or families who feel they qualify for reduced fees, please email Jennifer Napuli (napulij@brightonk12.com), so she can assist with the process.

Graduation Ceremony Rain Date and Time

We have gotten a few questions about the rain date for this year's Graduation Ceremony and specifically when the make-up ceremony would take place. Brighton Area Schools Student Wellness Information

As a part of the BAS Strategic Plan, we are always trying to find ways to maximize and support student growth. One of many ways we do this is through the Brighton Area Schools App. This app can be downloaded for free on iTunes and Google Play. It is loaded with resources for students and parents. In addition, consider using the "Your Best, Your Growth, Your Future" part of the app to submit a goal and receive 1:1 support and feedback to help you achieve it! The app will also allow you to receive notifications on what is happening throughout BAS and be updated on future events and information.
