Slaybaugh Elementary Career Day

The 2nd and 3rd grade students at Slaybaugh Elementary were treated to an afternoon exploring different careers. Many of our community partners visited the school to share their knowledge and expose students to different opportunities nearby. Atlanticare nurses gathered in the Slaybaugh elementary library and gave an overview of their profession, while letting students explore using a stethoscope to hear the heart beat, breath sounds, and stomach sounds.

D.E.A.R. Day, April 12th

D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything and Read," a national celebration of reading designed to remind families to make reading a priority activity in their lives.

D.E.A.R. Day, April 12th

Reading Rockets is pleased to be a founding partner of National D.E.A.R. Day. The day is meant to encourage families to set aside time to drop everything and read together at home. It's also the birthday of beloved author Beverly Cleary, whose characters Ramona and older sister Beezus are now favorites of a new generation of readers.

April is National Poetry Month!

Have you discovered Blackout Poetry yet? It’s equally fun for kids and adults and you probably have all you need to do it without buying a thing!

Blackout Poetry is a form of “found poetry” where you select words that catch your interest from a newspaper, book, or other printed text – along with a few additional words to make it flow. Then you “redact” all the words you don’t want. This is often (but not always) done with a black marker, hence the name “blackout poetry”. Your chosen words will form a new message, giving the text a whole new meaning. Click the picture below for directions!
