Winter Break - Math and Reading Access for Students

We are excited to share with you that we are rolling out an incentive program for students to reach math and reading goals over Winter Break! Students are encouraged to participate in math and reading activities at a time that works best for their families. As we all know, practice makes perfect! Whether it be for a sport, a musical instrument, or math and reading!

Students will be able to log into their “Clever” accounts to access a math program called, “Zearn” over the break. Studies have shown that when students practice with Zearn for 90 minutes a week, they make significant academic growth in their mathematical thinking and skills. According to a recent study shared on WeAreTeachers.com, in an analysis of over 9.9 million students in the United States, those “Who read for 15 minutes or more per day made accelerated reading gains”. In this spirit, we are hoping you and your student accept our new challenge, and practice math and reading at home with the following programs!

MATH - Zearn

  • Please watch the following video, to learn how students can access Zearn at home. We challenge you to have your students logged on to Zearn for 90 minutes per week over the holiday break! Need tips for encouraging your student on Zearn? Check out their “Zearn Helpers for Parents” sheet.

READING - Sora

  • If your student needs access to more books to read over Winter Break, Frisco ISD offers access to the Sora platform. This application is a digital library of Frisco ISD materials. You can view the following video to learn how to access Sora at home. Don’t forget to fill out your READING LOG, and return to your teacher on January 10, 2023 a reward. Paper copies of reading logs are attached to this letter.

We hope your family has a restful break! We encourage all students to participate in this challenge in order to maintain the academic skills learned over the fall semester. We look forward to seeing you all on January 10, 2023!

Rogers Innovation Fair (RIF) Highlights

Check out these highlights from our Rogers Innovation Fair (RIF) Wednesday, where our students participated in numerous hands-on STEM activities that were all in align with the FISD Future Ready Profile. Please check our social media and your student's Seesaw account for more pictures and videos!

We cannot thank Staley Middle School's AVID program, Digital Learning Coaches across the district, and the Corgan Inc. architects and engineers for all of their help making this happen!

Reminder - IDs Are Required For All Visitors To Campus

In a continuous effort to maintain the highest level of safety and security for students on our campus, Frisco ISD requires that all visitors present an ID when coming to campus.

This is true for parents picking up sick students, parents checking students out for appointments, and parents coming for lunch, Mystery Reader, or GMR. Thank you for your understanding as we continue to make Rogers Elementary a safe and secure place for students and staff to learn.

1st Grade CogAT Testing

On Wednesday, January 25th and Thursday January 26th Rogers’ First Graders will take the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The test will be given over 2 days for approximately 1.5 hours (this time includes breaks). Please schedule morning appointments on days other than CogAT testing. The CogAT test gives teachers and parents a snapshot of students’ higher level thinking, reasoning, and problem solving abilities (verbal, nonverbal, quantitative, and overall ability), as compared to other first graders in the nation. Please be sure your first grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on this day. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “Personal Best” on the test.

Mystery Reader Program Sign Up

A Mystery Reader program is a guest reader, BUT their identity is kept secret to build anticipation and excitement. Teachers may even choose to give clues before they arrive to get the students extra excited!

FISD Board Policy requires that each volunteer and/or mentor undergo a background check before working with students. You will be prompted to complete the background check during your VOLY account creation process. Keep an eye on your inbox for your background check approval (the process can take up to 3-5 business days). Once approved, you will be able to sign up directly for volunteer opportunities through the VOLY platform. To volunteer at Rogers Elementary, you will need to create a VOLY account by visiting https://friscoisd.voly.org.

5th Grade Parent Information

During Guidance this month, 5th grade students will start academic advising to get them ready for middle school. They will be using Myers Briggs’ personality questions to allow them to get to know themselves better. This will help with academic planning as they prepare to go to middle school. Also, Ms. Bocian will meet with the students to discuss strengths, weaknesses, and goals, and the students will start to think about which classes they might want to take in 6th grade. The middle school counselors will be coming to Rogers in January to give the students more information. Here is the information I will be sharing with the students. Parents, please check it out!
