Ms. Hanson's Notes Ms. Hanson's Notes

As we wrap up this week, I know everyone is eagerly anticipating the break next week. When we return, the week after the break will be a busy one on the Ave. We’re excited for Night of Expression, where students will showcase their work with families related to our Unit of Inquiry, How We Express Ourselves. We’ll also celebrate Black History Month with the Color and Culture performances, a guitar performance by Guitar Shed, and the Black History Bowl. Also, a reminder that the Mead Road Mardi Gras Parade is Saturday, March 1. Come join the F.AVE Krewe and receive beads and other prizes.

We want to thank everyone who came out for our Coffee Chat last Friday. Our next chat is March 7 and Courtney Bishop, our MTSS Coordinator, will be presenting on the Multi Tiered Support System, MTSS. She will help parents navigate the process of how we identify and support students who may have academic or behavioral needs.

Have a wonderful break, and we look forward to seeing everyone back on the 24th!

We are proud of our F.AVE Reading Bowl team, the Reading Rovers, for their participation in the Metro Regional Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl competition this past weekend at Clayton State University. Although our team did not place in the top three, they competed with joy and sportsmanship and were very competitive in most of their matches. These students have been working hard studying the books since August! Learn more about our team by visiting our website, designed by our student managers.

Our team members are Henry Barr, Maya Khan, Amelie Harris, Alaina Sunderland, Ruby Caplan, Maddie Swartz, River Siegler, Charlie Burkett, Amay Paravastu, Valentine Dyon Deveaux. Our student managers are Evan Riedl and Eliyahu Siegler and they are coached by Corinne Smith.

SCHOOL CLIMATE SURVEY

We have only 38% of F.AVE families who have completed the Family Climate Survey. I would like to share a friendly reminder that your voice is very important and we want your feedback! Responses are confidential and will be combined with the survey responses of other F.AVE families to identify areas in need of improvement. See directions below.

The City Schools of Decatur appreciates the contributions of parents, students, and employees. Each year, CSD takes part in annual school climate surveys and climate star ratings organized by the Georgia Department of Education. The outcomes will contribute to our district's School Climate Star Ratings, which are included in each school's yearly College and Career Ready Performance Index. All public schools in Georgia participate in a Student Health Survey, Parent Survey, and School Personnel Survey as part of the school climate survey process. Please complete the F.AVE Family Climate Survey. It will take no more than 10 minutes to complete. Feel free to reach out to me with any questions. Thank you for your time and participation.

Spotlight on Specials - STEAM

Our 3rd and 4th grade students are expressing themselves using Lego Education Spike Essential STEAM sets. They are learning how to create models that represent real-life scenarios, build through storytelling, and design and build models that demonstrate 3rd and 4th grade science concepts. Our students will program code to build robots that will perform certain tasks. The LEGO bricks also allow our students to create sculptures or art pieces that represent feelings and ideas. Thank You again to the DEF for allowing ALL F.Ave students to experience Lego Robotics in the classroom.

5th grade is using the engineering design process to design and build a Truss bridge. This project provides a tangible, hands-on experience by seeing the importance of geometry in construction. Our students are also applying mathematical concepts, including measurements and fractions to their bridge designs. This real-world application helps reinforce the relevance of math and the role of engineers in our everyday life.

Love My Bus Month!

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to Love My Bus month by dropping off gift cards for bus drivers at the FAVE front office or having your kiddos deliver notes of kindness directly to their bus driver. If you'd like to contribute, there's still time! We will be collecting gift cards through Friday and those donations will be distributed to our fantastic bus drivers at an appreciation event next week.

Help us thank Ms. Nichols (Bus 2015), Ms. Maria (Bus 2005), Ms. Annette (Bus 2010), Ms. Sylvia (Bus 2006), and Mr. Joseph (Bus 2003) who get our kids safely to and from school every day.

Congratulations to the 285 FAVE students who participated in Wednesday's Walk & Roll! We enjoyed seeing all the smiling faces of both students and parents enjoying the warm weather on their way to school. Decatur Education Foundation

Tour deCatur Registration is Open!

Get ready, get set, get registered for Decatur Education Foundation's 23rd annual Tour deCatur! Sign up at www.tourdecatur.com!

The fun happens on Saturday, March 15, at the Decatur High School stadium. This year, in addition to the 5k (a Peachtree qualifier), the 1-Mile Fun Run, and the adorable Tot Trot (for our friends ages four and under), DEF is offering a "None-Run" for anyone who wants to support Decatur kids without breaking a sweat! This is DEF's largest fundraiser and supports programs and initiatives that remove obstacles, provide opportunities, support educators, and strengthen the Decatur community!

To prepare for the race, all K-2 elementary schools in the district are participating in the iRun program, which teaches students the fundamentals of fitness skills that make running, jogging, and walking enjoyable and safe and prepares them to run the one-mile fun run in March. For more information about DEF's initiatives and how you can get involved, please visit www.decatureducationfoundation.org.
