"Encourage one another and build each other up ..."
1 Thessalonians 5:11
Well, we survived the heat this week! Thank you to the Lammers family for bringing popsicles for the class today!
Thank you all so very much for making my birthday feel so special this year! I absolutely LOVED the amazingly sweet birthday card! I am keeping it by my desk to always see! Thank you so much for the SUPER generous gift also! I am so touched by your generosity!
This week, we got a lot done. While we are continuing to stress the importance of following directions, and making good choices, it is spring, and we often need extra reminders. I appreciate your support at home in this as well. In Reading, we read an argumentative text on bees, called The Case of the Missing Bees, where two opinions on why bee colonies are in decline were presented, then supported with facts. This is a great intro to our next writing assignment, the persuasive essay. I've noticed many students rushing through reading assessments, and I am stressing the importance of slowing down and taking our time to look back through the text. In Math, we finished topic 11 on Volume. I was very strict this topic about showing work. Writing the formula, showing substitutions, and then a calculation shows your thought process in solving the problem, and best of all, helps to organize that process in the mind. Practice tests were taken today, and are in the Homework Folders to review and look over, as we test on Tuesday. Science was tricky this week because we really struggled with our transitions during our activity. Lots of distractions made it difficult to really take in the material, which affects our understanding. We ended up revisiting the topic today, instead of STEM, and the class demonstrated an amazing understanding and showed great growth! In Social Studies, we read about the three branches of government, and how they balance each other, and keep each other in check.
Book Fair
The Book Fair is coming! Fifth grade is scheduled to visit on Wednesday, March 25. For more information, and to set up an e-wallet for your student, please visit this site. There are preview flyers in the Friday Folder today, so your children can see what is coming!
Santa Cruz Fundraising Update
We have currently raised $959 out of the total trip cost of $1,716. Thank you to the Plummer and Connelly families who have volunteered to donate popsicles again. We will start selling the week after break.
Family Life
As you may remember from Mrs. Simolon's earlier email, Family Life (human reproduction) will not be taught as part of the school curriculum this year. We do have resources for you to borrow if you would like. However, I've heard from a few parents that they would like support in how to talk to their children about Family Life. Kat Landa has offered to connect interested parents with a friend who has a background in biology and the church's teachings on the theology of the body. This would not be a school sponsored event. If you are interested, please complete this form.
