THE VIKING
Hinesburg Community School - November 21, 2025
THE PRINCIPAL'S CORNER
Dear HCS Families, Community and HCS Staff,
Wishing everyone a peaceful, safe, and joy-filled week off! We hope this break gives you the chance to rest, recharge, and spend time with the people who matter most.
As we pause to reflect on the season of gratitude, we are reminded of how truly fortunate we are to be part of such a wonderful community. We are grateful for our amazing students, whose curiosity, kindness, and energy brighten our days. We are thankful for our dedicated teachers and staff who inspire us with their passion, creativity, and care. And we deeply appreciate all the parents, caregivers, and family members who support their children and our school in countless ways; both big and small.
We are also grateful for everyone behind the scenes who keeps HCS running smoothly each day: from the office and facilities teams, to our bus drivers, food service staff, and specialists. It takes a whole community to make a school feel like home, and we are thankful for each and every one of you.
May this week bring rest, laughter, connection, and moments of calm. Thank you for all you do and for being such an important part of our HCS family.
Warmly,
Tim and Alexis

HCS INSPIRATION AWARDS
Two students from Hinesburg Community School earned recognition at this week's board meeting for the many ways they uplift those around them.
Kindergarten teacher Alyssa Lasher celebrated Chase Gray for the deep compassion he shows his classmates and the kindness he extends to those who are feeling lonely. Literacy coach Natalie Lodge honored eighth grader Ruby Donegan for her growth as a learner and the thoughtfulness, care, and presence she brings to the classroom each day.
Thank you, Chase and Ruby, for the brightness you share with Hinesburg Community School.
WELL DONE LEGO ROBOTICS TEAMS!
HCS hosted its first F.I.R.S.T. LEGO League Challenge (FLL) competition on Tuesday, with 9 CVSD teams and more than 150 guests. Congratulations to our HCS teams: Team X-Cavators and Team Relish Rangers, on their innovation solution presentations and running their robot performances. The teams showed their teamwork and resilience throughout the event.
A special shout-out to the Relish Rangers for earning the FLL Breakthrough Award, which recognizes exceptional perseverance, growth, and dedication.
So much gratitude to our custodial crew for helping set up with the event and break down afterward. And also to many staff who helped and supported the teams in preparation.
Please wish the teams luck for their next regional qualifier competition in Rutland on December 7th!
SIGN UP FOR THE COCHRAN'S SKI & RIDE PROGRAM!
For: Hinesburg Community School students Grades 1 through 5 and Kindergartners if accompanied by an adult.
When: Thursdays, 2:30p.m. to 5:00p.m. (return to HCS by 5:30). Six weeks, January 8 - February 12, 2026 at Cochran's Ski Area in Richmond.
Cost: The total cost will be $80.00 per child. The Cochran's fee is $50.00 per student plus $30.00 for round trip bus transportation from HCS. For Cochran's season ticket holders, only the transportation charge of $30.00 is required. If you are driving your child to Cochran's from HCS, the cost is only $50. Please make checks payable to Hinesburg Community School and give to the front office before the start of the holiday break. Please put your child's name in the memo so we know who you have paid for.
Students who enroll in the program can continue skiing at Cochran's at no additional cost for the remainder of the ski season but please note: transportation and parent volunteers will not be provided after HCS's 6-week session ends on 2/12.
Rental Equipment: Ski (but not snowboard) equipment, including boots, may be rented for the duration of the HCS program from Cochran's for $20 (add to the total cost and include in the same check). If you are renting gear, you MUST bring your child into Cochran's for a rental fitting session before the program starts, anytime between 9am and 4pm. Parent volunteers will NOT do this for your child (they will have a whole group of other children to ski with) and if your child does not have their rental gear, they will have to sit out on the first day.
Volunteers: The After School Ski/Ride Program at Cochran's Ski Area is run by parents and other volunteers. Parents and volunteers coordinate the program as well as help out on the bus, on the slopes, and in the lodge. Both skier/snowboarder and non-skier/snowboarder volunteers are welcome. The success of the program is dependent upon it! Even if you don’t ski or snowboard, volunteers on foot are super helpful, especially in the beginning. Parents who volunteer can ski/ride free on Thursdays. To help, please sign up below.
Equipment drop-off: Parents will need to bring ski/riding equipment to school each Thursday and drop it off with Oren Guttman who will be in the lower HCS parking lot from 7:30am to 8:10am. Please do not bring ski/riding equipment on the bus to school. Please label each piece of equipment with child's name. Children are responsible for getting their gear back onto Oren's truck for return to HCS, so talk to them about managing their equipment.
Pick up: Parents must pick up their children at HCS by 5:30 p.m.
To register, please complete the Google form and send a check payment by the holiday break to the Hinesburg Community School Office. See above for payment/cost info.
With the exception of prioritizing the children of volunteers, registration is first-come/first-serve.
If the cost of the program is preventing you from enrolling your child/ren, please contact Laura at lauramatti7@gmail.com.
