WEEKLY RECAP
We had a wide range of engaging learning experiences this week! In 8th grade Science, students explored the concept of unbalanced forces. Spanish students participated in a vocabulary scavenger hunt, while Robotics students began building their base foundations using different types of gears. In Foods class, students gave presentations on foodborne illnesses and made cake in a mug.
Thank you to everyone who attended Back to School Night. We appreciate your time and your dedication to your students' education. At the middle school level, our core focus areas are exploration, growth, and leadership. This means students will make mistakes along the way—and that’s part of the learning process. As a partnership, we will work with our families to help our students grow in these areas. We’re excited to support their development in all three areas here at Hills.
THANK YOU...
to everyone who attended Back to School Knight!
We had a wonderful turnout and loved connecting with our families.
You probably heard a lot about Canvas during the evening—here is the Adult User Guide to Canvas for your reference.
We also want every student to find something that sparks their interest. Click here to view our Clubs and Activities Flyers. If your student has an idea for a club or activity that isn’t currently offered, they just need to ask a teacher to sponsor it to get started.
LANCER DAY - IMPORTANT INFO
Lancer Day is Friday, Sept. 5th
Lancer Day is an annual parade hosted by Shawnee Mission East to celebrate the start of Lancer Football season. Although this is a high school event, it has a significant impact on Indian Hills, with more than 600 of our students typically attending. If you choose to have your student participate, please review the checkout options below:
Option 1: Excused All Day to Attend the Parade
Keep your student home for the day.
Enter the absence in Skyward to have it excused.
Option 2: Attend Classes in the Morning, Then Leave for the Parade
Students attend Knight Time, 1st, and 2nd hour, then leave at 11:00 a.m.
Enter a dismissal pass in Skyward for your student to leave at 11:00.
Students without a Skyward dismissal will experience significant delays before being released.
Parking may be limited—please plan to use lots or side streets.
At 11:00 a.m., line up outside the IHMS Events Entrance (Door #2, north of the main entrance).
Parents will be allowed into the building a few at a time to meet their student in the cafeteria.
Students and parents will then check out through the north cafeteria doors.
A photo ID is required for checkout.
Students may only leave with a parent/guardian/emergency contact listed in Skyward.
Friends or groups cannot be checked out by the same parent.
Option 3: Attend School All Day
Classes will continue as normal.
For questions about the parade itself (route, start time, etc.), please contact the Shawnee Mission East front office at 913-993-6600. For questions about checkout procedures, call the IHMS front office.
CONGRATULATIONS, MR. EWING!

ATTENDANCE TIPS
✅ First Month = Strong Start! ✅
You know what is cooler than Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce getting engaged? YOU crushing the first month of school—amazing work! 🎉
Here’s the deal: students who have great attendance in the first month are way more likely to keep it up all year and do better in school. In fact, studies show that missing just 2 days a month can make it harder to stay on track!
💡 Why does it matter?
A strong start builds good habits, helps you keep up with work, and sets you up for success in academics, sports, clubs, and friendships.
📅 Challenge:
Can you finish this week with perfect attendance? Tag a friend to keep each other accountable!
Next week begins a super important month, so stay tuned for more!!! You’ve got this—keep the streak alive! 💪

FROM OUR SRO, DETECTIVE FLORES:
Hello IHMS students and parents,
First off, let me say that it has already been a great start to the school year and I can truly feel the positivity that the students bring every day. I look forward to meeting and engaging with our new IHMS students as well as our returning 8th graders. Recently there has been a great deal of discussion in Prairie Village regarding E-Bikes and E-Scooters. A few of the students I have spoken with have asked questions as to the Police department’s stance on E-bikes and E-scooters as well as the recent ordinance change in Prairie Village. Here are a few main bullet points regarding the new ordinance.
- Class 1 and Class 2 E-bikes as well as E-scooters can be legally operated on both the sidewalks and roads of Prairie Village. If they are operated on the roadway, all traffic laws apply and must be followed by the operator.
- Both E-bikes and E-scooter operators must yield to the right of way to pedestrians and give an audible signal prior to overtaking pedestrians.
- All riders under the age of 18 must always wear a helmet.
- Class 3 E-bikes (Models capable of reaching speeds more than 20 mph) must only be driven on the roadway by an operator 16 years of age or older.
- E-bikes and E-scooters can carry passengers if the model if properly equipped to do so.
- Mission Hills only -All Electric assisted bicycles and motorized bicycles shall not be operated on sidewalks.
The focus of the Prairie Village Police regarding E-bike and E-scooter operation is on education of safe and responsible riding. Although, continued disregard of the ordinance may result in further enforcement actions, this is really not the goal. I encourage parents to speak with their children about safe operation of E-bikes and E-scooters and to research on the E-bike or E-scooter prior to purchase to ensure that you are in compliance with the ordinance. Again, our biggest goal is to keep the community safe and avoid a potential tragedy and I ask for everyone’s assistance to ensure that our youth are responsible and safe. Please refer to the links below for the full ordinance of both Mission Hills and Prairie Village.
