Message From the Principal
Dear Families,
The rainy weather is here! On Tuesday, the students and staff handled it well, as we went outside for a recess and then back in when it started raining. It’s always a challenge but our routines are falling into place. When it’s wet and slippery on the stairs leading to the lower playground, I stand on the side saying, “Walk!” Kids are funny - they just want to bolt down the stairs.
If you haven’t already done so, parents/guardians, please take a few minutes to complete the survey for the California Healthy Kids program. CSPS identifies which needs and concerns of parents schools should address in promoting greater involvement. For more information, check out the website, https://calschls.org/about/the-surveys/
This short survey provides a means to confidentially obtain:
parent perceptions about the school's learning environment;
school climate;
student supports; and
parent outreach and involvement efforts (e.g., how welcoming, communicative).

We want to hear from everyone!
Thank you and thanks for all you do to support Wildwood Elementary!

Read-a-thon Success!
We want to thank those who were able to participate in our recent Read-a-thon! First, a big thanks to our 3rd grade teacher, Ms Sears, for coming up with the idea and creating the paperwork for it. Our classroom teachers sent it all home and many were able to participate. Our pledges were approximately $5,000! The funds were sent directly to the World Central Kitchen to help all their amazing work helping people after the fires in Southern California. An extra shout out to 4th grader Avi for pledging almost $800 for the read-a-thon! Thank you for making this such a success!
Special Education Inclusion Program
We've received a few questions about our new Inclusion Program so here is some more information for everyone. This year, Wildwood added a special education inclusion program, which was created based on the needs of our district. The program serves neurodiverse students who need support beyond the regular classroom and the learning center, another program for students with special education needs. The goal of the inclusion program is to provide academic and social-emotional instruction in a specialized environment as well as integrate the students into the regular classroom.
We have a range of students at our school, academically, socially, physically, and emotionally. We want to provide places for all of them to learn and grow. Having an inclusion program helps to create a rich, diverse environment at a school, and our inclusion classroom is growing into a wonderful space for just that. It is a place for students to have their individualized education goals met, including in the areas of English language arts, writing, math, and social-emotional. I got to enjoy a dance party there one day. I've seen students with and without special education needs participate in lunch bunches in the room and play academic-based games. I've watched the students in the program progress in their skills and have the support needed to succeed in their general education classrooms.
Our goal is to make the inclusion class a place for all students, welcoming students outside of the program and those with special education needs. For example, students outside of the program would have the opportunity to use the tools there to get a sensory or energy break by jumping on the trampoline or landing on the crash pad—all while ensuring the students in the program have their needs met. We are developing the program, and it's a wonderful opportunity to support the Wildwood Way—Be Inclusive!

We Want to Hear from You! - California School Parent Survey
Parent involvement is a Local Control and Accountability Plan (LCAP) State priority. Please take a few minutes to complete the survey link below. This short survey provides a means to confidentially obtain:
parent perceptions about the school's learning environment;
school climate;
student supports; and
parent outreach and involvement efforts (e.g., how welcoming, communicative).
It also provides data on the scope and nature of parent involvement at the school (relationships, activities) and in the child's education in general.
CSPS identifies which needs and concerns of parents schools should address in promoting greater involvement. Asking parents to provide their perceptions of the school is an empowering parent-involvement activity. For more information, check out the website, https://calschls.org/about/the-surveys/
Survey Link:
https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wested/ts/e2bp
(Staff will also be taking a survey similar to this one, but from the staff perspective. 5th grade students will also be taking a survey but from a student perspective. Some 5th grade families opted their child out in the beginning of the school year and those students won’t take the survey. Survey results are usually available in the Fall and will be shared with the community at a future date.)

Parents Club Update
We look forward to seeing you at the next Community Coffee at 8:30am Friday, 2/14 (yep - it’s a Valentine’s Day edition!).
Speaking of Valentine’s, a shout-out to the 3rd grade class, who is showering our wonderful Wildwood staff with love next week as hosts of the February Staff Appreciation Lunch!
Each month, a grade hosts a special luncheon in the Staff Lounge, and we often don’t get the chance to celebrate all the hard that goes into it. So far, the 5th and 4th grades have hosted; 2nd and 1st grades will host in March and April. In the first week of May, Kindergarten will host lunch among a weeklong Staff Appreciation Week celebrated schoolwide. More info to come on that, but if you’d like to be a part of the planning party, please feel free to email us.

Community Hike
Hi Wildwood,
Community Hike this Sunday!!
Please join Hawk and I this weekend at Strawberry Canyon in Berkeley. We will walk along a small creek on the outskirts of UC Botanical gardens, through a Redwood Grove with Hobbit homes, up, up and away to a gorgeous birdseye view of the Bay. This is one of my favorite hikes nearby. Parking can be a challenge, look below for 2 options. This 2-2.5 mile hike has quite a bit of offroading, so strollers won't make it. Bring water and a snack for your family. Once we reach the lookout, we may need some fuel to head back.
When: this Sunday, February 9 @ 9:30AM
Where: Very little parking here: Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley at trailhead
Additional Parking here: Witter Lot, 5 minute walk from trailhead
Hope to see you and whomever you’d like to bring/invite.
This hike is dog friendly.
