Halloween Activities and Expectations
It's Almost Halloween!
We invite elementary parents to come watch the costume parade on the morning of October 30th. The parade will start after morning announcements in grade 1, making its way through the elementary classrooms before they head upstairs into junior high. There will be other Halloween activities throughout the day for all students.
Here are some guidelines for our school Halloween events:
Costumes
🎃 Keep it Spooky, Not Scary: Please ensure costumes do not perpetuate stereotypes or reinforce limited and/or hurtful ways of thinking about people. Gory costumes and toy or replica weapons need to remain at home. We recommend students bring costumes that they are able to put on without assistance as this will be a busy time for staff.
👁️ Masks and Makeup: Masks that cover the eyes and face are fine, as long as your child can see clearly. Please keep makeup minimal and apply it at home. Remember, learning is still happening, so your child might need to remove their mask during class.
🎒 Easy-to-Carry Props: If your child has props, they should be easy to manage, especially if they take the bus.
🚫 No Weapons: Please don’t include any toy weapons in the costume.
🏃 Costumes in the Classroom: If your child has Physical Education, the costume should be safe and easy to move in. Inflatable costumes will need to be deflated during classroom instruction.
Lakeland Ridge Parent/Teacher Interviews
Tuesday, November 3 and Wednesday, November 4, 2026
Parent/Teacher Interviews will be held on Tuesday, November 3 and Wednesday, November 4. This is a valuable opportunity for families and teachers to discuss student progress and identify next steps for learning. Appointment booking will open on Tuesday, October 27 at 9:00 a.m. and will close on Tuesday, November 3 at 9:00 a.m.
A school messenger will be sent out the morning of November 2 with detailed instructions.
Live Access to Student Assessment Information is Now Available
With the 2026-27 school year underway, live access to your child’s assessment information is now available through the “Grades and Attendance” tab in your PowerSchool Parent Portal for all Lakeland Ridge School students. Your child's gradebook may only have a few assessments at this time, but additional assessment information will continue to be added throughout the school year. We encourage families to review the gradebook information within the Parent Portal regularly to learn more about what your child is learning this year. More information resources about this assessment information and how to access the PowerSchool Parent Portal is available on the Student Assessment page of the Division website.
If you have any questions about how your child is doing this school year, reach out directly to their teacher or make a note to discuss it at the upcoming school interviews on November 3 and 4, 2026. If you have any issues logging into your Parent Portal account, reach out to the school office at 780-416-9018.
Inclement Weather
With the winter season almost here, the school has a few reminders for families:
Ensure students have clothing appropriate for expected weather conditions.
If weather conditions are bad enough to impact student transportation, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) advises families directly, and posts updates on social media and eips.ca.
Decisions regarding bus cancellations are guided by an EIPS administrative procedure that states, “school bus service may be suspended…when there is a forecast or current temperature of -40 C, including wind chill factor, in one or more regions.” Other reasons for suspending or delaying school bus services include adverse weather and poor road conditions.
When school bus services are suspended, schools remain open to students.
For more information, contact EIPS Student Transportation at 780-417-8151.
Caregiver Series
Alberta Health Services is hosting a series of virtual caregiver information sessions focused on ways to support students’ mental health. The sessions are free and geared toward parents, caregivers, teachers and community members who want to learn more about challenges impacting children and adolescents. This November’s sessions are focused on understanding anxiety.
Visit Caregiver Education to see the monthly caregiver sessions.

Take Our Kids to Work Day
Elk Island Public Schools is pleased to inform you that Take Our Kids to Work Day is fast approaching! This national event, happening on November 4, 2026, provides Grade 9 students with the unique opportunity to step outside the classroom and into the workplace for a day of career exploration. This year’s theme is: Different Perspectives, Shared Direction!
We encourage parents and caregivers to arrange for their student to join them at their workplace, or connect them with a relative, neighbor, or friend who can provide a safe and educational experience. If your student is unable to participate through family connections, students should attend their regularly scheduled school day to participate in one of the many career exploration activities that their school will have prepared.
Grade 9 families, watch for more information through Permission Click coming soon.

New K-6 Achievement Reporting Scale Pilot
In 2026-27, Elk Island Public Schools (EIPS) is piloting a new reporting scale for communicating elementary student achievement. Most recently, kindergarten to Grade 6 student achievement has been reported using a five-point scale. This year, the Division is piloting a new three-point scale for kindergarten to Grade 2 and a four-point scale for grades 3 to 6. The goals of the pilot are to provide useful, clear communication to parents and caregivers about their child’s progress, and provide a clear, consistent framework for teachers to use for assessment of student learning.
The draft achievement scales were developed based on teacher and administrator input, assessment research and reviews of best practices across Alberta, Canada and the world. However, it’s critical parents and caregivers feel confident about the reporting structure. Throughout the fall and winter, Division and school staff will share more information to introduce the new grade scales, collect initial feedback and answer questions through school council meetings, school interviews and school newsletters. The feedback collected will help EIPS revise the grading scales as needed, and opportunities for further feedback will be available later in the school year.
Check out the Student Assessment Processes website for more information and parent resources.
