Chelsea Center
Experiential Education Opportunities for ALL students
May 14, 2026
The Chelsea Detrick Memorial Scholarship has been dedicated in honor of Chelsea Detrick, 2003 graduate from Webster Groves High School, who tragically passed away in 2009, just as she was beginning to find her place in the world. Chelsea’s father, Glenn Detrick, founded the Chelsea Center to help students explore their passions and career interests through hands-on and community-based learning, as a way to honor Chelsea and to expand her legacy. This scholarship, also in honor of Chelsea Detrick, provides one student who embodies the qualities of Chelsea: conscientious, hard-working, motivated, intelligent and admired by WGHS teachers for their attitude and personality, with a $1000 scholarship, renewable for up to 4 years.
This year’s scholarship winner is Meah Maschak. Meah’s work ethic, tenacity and heart exemplify what experiential learning is all about. Her desire to be a nurse led her to participate in a competitive summer program at Mizzou called Mini-Med. Her reflections from the experience demonstrated the deep, meaningful learning we hope all students engage in. She then took the next step to further her learning by joining the Chelsea Center’s Mercy Clinical Field Experience. The success of this pilot program, like many others, is determined in part by the caliber of its participants, and this student’s energy, passion and professionalism set the tone for this year and the future. She often returned from her weekly Mercy experiences, regaling us with stories from Labor and Delivery–the moms she met, their birth stories, her growing relationships with the nurses in that department. Her goal for the 10-week experience was to *hopefully* observe one birth –she saw 7. The language of her reflective conversations about her time at Mercy Hospital switched from what “they” were doing to support moms and babies to what “we” were doing–how “we” administered pitocin or how “we” encouraged the mom through the fear of contractions and giving birth. Even in a shadowing experience where students are there as observers and learners, she quickly became part of the nursing team as a result of her willingness to contribute in whatever ways she could and in seeking out opportunities for her own growth. Even after the end of a long shift, she seemed to never want to leave.
Meah is an example of what experiential learning is all about. We are proud to award Meah Maschak the 2026 Chelsea Detrick Memorial Scholarship.
