LISD School Newsletter
From Dr. Martin....
Dear LISD Families,
Spring is the perfect time for off-campus and off-island field trips, and we love providing our students with opportunities to learn and shine outside the walls of a classroom. One of our important spring experiences is the Coast Salish: Land, Sea, and Place program facilitated for our 6th, 7th, and 8th graders by the Lopez Island Family Resource at Camp Moran on Orcas Island. As I write, the 6th grade class has just returned from Camp Moran, and by the time you read this, the 7th and 8th graders will be there.
The multi-day program makes it possible for our students to take a boat trip to one of the outer islands (6th graders went to Sucia!), learn about the ancestral history and cultural significance of the San Juan Islands from tribal elders, participate in outdoor recreation activities, and enjoy time with their peers.
This is the 4th year that we have partnered with the LIFRC to offer this program. We so appreciate Susannah Dunlap for her careful design of activities and experiences, and LISD staff members and parent volunteers for chaperoning.
Have a lovely week everyone.
All my best,
Martha Martin

Announcing the LISD Path to Calculus!
Lopez Island School now offers an educational pathway to Calculus. This pathway would put students on track to take Calculus their senior year - which is an expectation of many four-year colleges. Students can opt in to the "Path to Calculus" in 7th grade or 10th grade. More info about how your student can get on this path is here.
Elementary Field Day - Wednesday, May 27
Volunteers Needed!
Every year, the Lopez Island PTSA puts a field day for our elementary students. Activities can include a mix of classic, water-based, and team-building games for all ages, such as relay races, tug-of-war, sack races, water balloon tosses, and more. The PTSA needs volunteers to help create this fun afternoon for our elementary students. Time commitment is minimal - approximate 2 hours. If you can help, please contact Serina Adams, serinaadams@gmail.com
Reminder about Yearbook Fees - Payment Needed
$47 for hardback secondary yearbook; $25 for softcover elementary yearbook
Yearbook fees are now due. If your family qualifies for free or reduced lunch the LISD Yearbook Club is covering the cost of your student's yearbook.
If your family does not qualify for free or reduced lunch, payment for yearbooks needs to be made before your student can get a yearbook. All payments should be delivered to the school's District Office at 86 School Rd. Checks should be made out to LISD with a note that it is for the Yearbook Club.

What is one of your favorite memories from school? All the years that I’ve played soccer have been really fun. Going to state this year was something really special, and we all got really close. It was our second year as a girls team and we were able to do that!
What are your plans after high school, and what are you most excited about? I’m going to Seattle University and planning to study criminology. I’m excited to explore a new environment and be on my own…hopefully meet new people to have fun with.
What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years? I hope I’m happy and in a career. I want to be living a comfortable life, enjoying what I’m doing, not stressed out, and feeling good about myself. I kind of want to live in California, somewhere sunny and by the beach.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self? Do your assignments on time and take your classes seriously. If you don’t do that at the beginning of high school, it can affect you later. Try to make friends and be friendly with everyone, and if you’re interested in something, just try it out and don’t be scared.
What is the most meaningful assignment or project given to you by a teacher? In Heritage Spanish class, we did a history assignment about La Llorona. It was really funny and fun. In the presentation, we acted out scenes and made a video to play.
What is a favorite book, movie, song, or show that tells us something about you? Marvel movies. When I like something, I really get into it. Also, there is a football show called All American. I’ve watched it many times and it’s really cringy but also very funny. What that says about me is that I’m not a very serious person. I love to laugh and joke around.
Who or what inspires you? My parents because they are very encouraging and understanding. My dad gives really good advice. My mom is very direct and tells me things straight up.
When you’re not in school or working, how do you like to spend your free time? I like to use my phone to watch TikToks and send my friends funny videos. I also love to listen to music and play soccer.
In what ways do you feel you have had an impact on your community? I feel like in some ways through different clubs, Youth Help Advocates and Orgullo Latino, I’ve had a lot of opportunity to help with or create community events for kids and teens. It’s been meaningful for me to do that and I think others appreciate it.
In what ways do you want to have a positive impact on the world in the future? I want to be a person who can be counted on and trusted…someone who speaks up about human rights issues that affect vulnerable people.
What else do you think people should know about you? I like sports cars and think I want one in the future….like a BMW M4 or a Camaro ZL1

What is one of your favorite memories from school?
Senior night for soccer this fall when we beat Mount Vernon Christian. They haven’t been beat in a league game in the last seven years. Everyone saw our team as the underdog. Earlier in the season, we played them and didn’t do well at all, so it was good to get revenge and show them what we were capable of.
What are your plans after high school, and what are you most excited about?
I’m playing soccer for Skagit Valley College. I really want to become a labor and delivery nurse or a midwife, so I’m doing all my nursing pre-requisites at SVC next year and then I’ll apply to nursing school. After I get my associates degree in nursing, I’ll be working as a nurse and also working on getting my BSN.
What do you hope your life will be like in 10 years?
I hope that I have traveled to all the places I want to, and I want to be financially stable and feel fulfilled and happy in my work. I want to wake up every day feeling good about getting to do the work I do.
Knowing what you know now, what advice would you give your freshman self?
Prioritize your friendships with people who make you happy, and even though you don’t feel confident right now, you won’t always feel like that. Learn how to say “no.” The sooner you get comfortable with saying “no”, the easier things will be. Also, don’t get involved in unnecessary drama that doesn’t concern you. Sometimes, the best way to help people is to leave them alone.
What is the most meaningful assignment or project given to you by a teacher?
We did monologues with Mr. Carter during freshman year. I did one that made me really love acting. It made me a lot more comfortable being vulnerable in front of other people, and it helped me focus and tune out everything else. It also helped me with public speaking.
What is a favorite book, movie, song, or show that tells us something about you?
My favorite book series is the Boys of Tommen series. It follows a group of high schoolers in Ireland who all have their own struggles. Some are worse than others and each book goes into different back stories. The characters don’t let their struggles define them and are all able to learn from the experiences and grow. I hope I can do that too. The books also bring awareness to mental health and the importance of showing people that no matter your age or gender, it’s okay to struggle with things. It’s nothing to be ashamed of and you can come out on the other side of it.
Who or what inspires you?
People who lead with curiosity and love, treat everyone equally, and aim to make other people’s days better even in small ways.
When you’re not in school or working, how do you like to spend your free time?
I love reading, playing soccer, going to the beach, and being with my boyfriend and my friends.
In what ways do you feel you have had an impact on your community?
For all the community service hours I’ve done, it’s mostly been related to younger kids, like coaching soccer.
In what ways do you want to have a positive impact on the world in the future?
I really hope that I can make people feel understood and appreciated. Also, one of the reasons I want to be a labor and delivery nurse is to make women feel safe and in control of their experience.
What else do you think people should know about you?
My favorite animal is a raccoon, and I used to not kill mosquitos because I worried about them having a family. I think the Joe Riley mosquito song made me too empathetic towards mosquitos until about two or three years ago.
