Week 5 — Resilience Requires Struggle
If we remove every struggle, we may also remove opportunities to build resilience.
Think about learning to ride a bicycle. A child doesn't develop confidence because an adult keeps the bicycle perfectly balanced forever. The child develops confidence by wobbling, correcting, trying again, and eventually discovering, “I can do this.”
Academic learning works the same way. Reading a difficult book, solving a challenging math problem, learning to write, making a new friend, or trying a new activity can all involve frustration. When adults immediately step in whenever something becomes difficult, children may begin to believe that struggle means they aren't capable.
Instead, help children distinguish between “This is hard” and “I can't do this.” Those are very different statements.
Try saying:
- “I know this is difficult. Keep working.”
- “What have you tried so far?”
- “Let's think of another strategy.”
- “You don't have to know how to do it yet.”
- “I'm here to support you, but I won't do it for you.
Try this at home: Praise persistence and strategy, not simply getting the correct answer.
