👏 Slater is an AVID-Certified School! 🎉
Mission: Empower all students through high expectations to embrace learning and achieve personal success.
Vision: Embraced – Educated - Empowered
3rd Grade
Mrs. Davis's students created a social contract as part of a team building exercise the first week of school. They discussed Slater's BARK rules and analyzed what following them means as a 3rd grader. Students provided expectations and real life examples of what that could look like and how they WANT it to look like for their team; then signed our contract as an agreement to follow those rules to the best of their ability.
Kindergarten
Ms. Ellibee’s students engaged in a collaborative activity focused on identifying safe and unsafe choices at school. Through group discussions and decision-making, students explored real-life scenarios and learned how to make choices that promote safety and respect for themselves and others. Activities like this help build a strong foundation for positive behavior, setting students up for success both inside and outside the classroom.
Slater kindergarten students work together like a team - at school, at home, and in our neighborhood. Mrs. Davis's kindergarteners are thankful for the Frontier Oregon Parent Education Hub that provided our kinder students with ALL of their school supplies this year to help our learning!
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!
5th Grade
`
Students in Miss Howes's class worked on “All About Me” suitcases to allow classmates to get to know each other and build a strong classroom community! They also made name tents that asked them what superpower they wish they had, favorite food, what they want to be when they grow up, and what’s the best thing they did this summer.
These students have also been learning how to work collaboratively and use active listening to complete assignments with partners, groups or independently. Students even worked together to come up with a classroom social contract.
Students in Ms. Murphy's class engaged in an activity where they wrote their thoughts about reading and then shared with other in an 'inner circle outer circle' activity.
These 5th graders also loved a fun math facts competition! Students stood on each side of the whiteboard and solved a math problem quickly. The winner got to stay up there for the next round. Each equation was repeated with the class so everyone gets to hear and repeat the facts!
Here is an example of a 5th grade planner! Students are working hard to build the skills each year of elementary school to get to this level!
Families, please make sure you are signing your child's planner each night, reading at least 20 minutes, and returning planners and red folders to school every day!
2nd Grade
Students in Mrs. Burns’s class enjoyed completing an All About Me pennant for AVID while learning new similarities with classmates.
Mrs. Burns’s students found out that most students prefer ice cream to cake, would rather go camping than to the waterpark, and prefer hamburgers over pizza for dinner! Making connections and learning about how we are similar and different and that it is ok!
Miss Weil's second graders also worked on All About Me pennants for AVID!
Her students even participated in a philosophical chairs debate. The question was: Should everyone be allowed to bring their pet to school?
Miss Weil's class worked
hard to create All About Me Cameras
so they could get to know each
other better!
Amazing job, Khloe!
Mrs. Wilke's second graders started the school year off strong with many activities to get to know one another, too!
Oliver definitely enjoyed the All About Me activity!
Mission: To provide staff and students with a safe, respectful, responsible, and professional environment to learn and grow.
Vision: To produce students who are emotionally, socially, and academically prepared for high school.
Science
`
Students in Mrs Sorenson's class built relational capacity during the first week of school by reviewing/previewing content-specific vocabulary by playing "Science Taboo." Teams had to work together to guess a specific vocabulary word without saying a list of 'taboo' words. The game started slowly and timidly, but ended up full of competition, a bit of charades, and a lot of laughter.
...and of course, class wouldn't be complete...
...without Ms. Sorenson's puny posters!
Health
`
Mrs. Moss's 7th grade Health class practiced interviewing skills by surveying multiple students with thoughtful questions on the mental health topic of stress. After recording responses and analyzing their data, as a class they identified resources needed and provided within their community and school.
These students also participated in an engaging collaborative activity on the effects of stress on middle school age students. As students interacted with each other, they listened respectfully and shared ideas as they were breaking down social barriers of mental health.
Mission Statement: Empowering students to learn, grow, and lead.
Vision Statement: To foster a community of learners where curiosity, critical thinking, and academic excellence equip students for success through an AVID framework.
Basic Design
`
First day in 9th grade Basic Design! Ms. Howes's students built relational capacity with name tents featuring their name, 4 words to describe themselves, something they do well, something they value, and something they like to do. The essential question was: “Why is relational capacity important, and how do we build it in our class?” Students paired and shared, inquired about one another, collaborated, and did a quick write on what they learned about other students.
Elena did great sharing hers with the class!
Nice work, Lyra!
Azalea and Natalynn working hard!
Good job, Mylez!
