Roosevelt Report
April 12, 2026
Principal Points
Dear Roosevelt Families,
As we head into an important week at Roosevelt, we are filled with both excitement and pride. Our 3rd and 4th grade students will begin M-STEP testing, an opportunity for them to show all they have learned and how much they have grown this year.
We want our students to know—this is not about perfection, it’s about effort, perseverance, and confidence. Each question is a chance to demonstrate their thinking, their resilience, and all of the hard work they’ve put in throughout the year. We are so proud of them and know they are ready to demonstrate all they have learned!
At the same time, April is Autism Acceptance Month, a time that is especially meaningful here at Roosevelt. We are honored to be home to our LPS K–2 Autism Program, which is truly a treasured part of our school community. This program enriches our building in countless ways and reminds us daily of the importance of inclusion, understanding, and celebrating each individual’s unique strengths.
Our students learn alongside one another not just academically, but socially and emotionally—growing in empathy, kindness, and respect. This is what makes Roosevelt so special.
As we move through this week, we are focused on:
- 💪 Persevering through challenges
- 🌱 Growing independence
- ❤️ Supporting and celebrating one another
Together, we will continue to create a school where every student feels seen, valued, and capable of success.
Let’s have a wonderful week, Tigers!
With Tiger Pride,
Mrs. Samouelian

AUTISM ACCEPTANCE MONTH
Autism Acceptance Month (observed each April) is about moving beyond awareness and toward true understanding, inclusion, and celebration of individuals with autism.
The Purpose of Autism Acceptance Month
1. Promote Acceptance (not just awareness)
It shifts the focus from simply “knowing autism exists” to valuing and respecting autistic individuals for who they are. Acceptance means creating environments where differences are understood and embraced—not changed.
2. Celebrate Neurodiversity
Autism is part of the broader concept of neurodiversity, which recognizes that all brains work differently. This month highlights the strengths, perspectives, and contributions of autistic individuals.
3. Increase Understanding
It helps educate communities about:
- How autism can look different in every person
- Communication differences
- Sensory needs
- Social and emotional experiences
This understanding leads to more compassionate schools, workplaces, and communities.
4. Advocate for Inclusion and Equity
Autism Acceptance Month encourages:
- Inclusive classrooms and practices
- Accessible environments
- Opportunities for meaningful participation in all aspects of life
5. Amplify Autistic Voices
A key focus is listening to and uplifting autistic individuals, ensuring their perspectives guide decisions, policies, and practices.
For Roosevelt this month is an opportunity to:
- Teach students about kindness, empathy, and differences
- Normalize diverse ways of learning and communicating
- Build a sense of belonging for all students
- Reinforce that everyone has unique strengths
Please check out Instagram to learn more about Autism and see inside the World of Cub Crew and Inclusion at Roosevelt.

APRIL CHARACTER TRAIT: EMPATHY
Helping children develop empathy at home is one of the most powerful ways families can support both social-emotional growth and success at school. For elementary-aged children, empathy is a skill that can be modeled, practiced, and reinforced in everyday moments.
Here are meaningful, practical ways parents can help:
Model Empathy Every Day
Children learn empathy by watching the adults around them.
-
Talk out loud about your thinking:
“That cashier looks really tired—I wonder if they’ve had a long day.”
- Show kindness in action (holding doors, helping neighbors)
✨ Message to kids: We notice others and we care.
Talk About Feelings (Yours and Theirs)
Help children build emotional vocabulary.
- Ask:
- “How do you think your friend felt when that happened?”
- “What do you think they needed in that moment?”
-
Share your own feelings in simple ways:
“I felt frustrated earlier, so I took a deep breath.”
✨ Empathy starts with understanding emotions.
Use Books and Shows as Teaching Moments
Stories are powerful tools for empathy.
- Pause and ask:
- “Why do you think that character did that?”
- “Have you ever felt that way?”
- Connect it back to real life
✨ This helps children practice perspective-taking in a safe way.
Practice “What Would You Do?”
Create simple, real-life scenarios:
- “What would you do if someone was sitting alone at lunch?”
- “What could you say if your friend felt sad?”
Let your child think, respond, and even role-play.
✨ Practice builds confidence to act with empathy.
ATTENTION 4TH GRADE FAMILIES
