Happy Black History Month!

Are you familiar with how Black History Month was started? If not, check out this blog post from Learning in Afterschool and Summer. Though Black History Month gained national recognition in 1976, Black teachers established the celebration during the Jim Crow era. Carter G. Woodson, a longtime public school teacher and historian, had noted that contributions of Black people had long been ignored by those writing American history books. He fought for the recognition and celebration of the contributions of Black people, and to “infuse students’ learning with critical knowledge about racial domination as well as the long traditions of Black resistance and achievement.” This began with a week-long celebration that transformed into Black History Month. By the 1930s, it was celebrated by more than 80% of Black high schools in the states.

Happy Lunar New Year!

February 1, 2022 is the most important day in the Chinese calendar with the start of the Lunar New Year. This event is not only relevant in Asia, but also in other countries where this Chinese tradition is respected and celebrated. 2022 is the year of the tiger.

Glover ASE: Chinese Painting

Guided by Miss Susan, Glover ASE students did some Chinese brush painting to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Students practiced painting Chinese characters with black tempera paint and tried their hand at some panda images with watercolors.
