DHS Student Secures Clothing Donation Bin to Improve Sustainability Efforts

DHS student Willow Hagen, co-president of the DHS Fashion Club, has a passion for service and sustainability that has led to a new recycling initiative at DHS. Along with DHS social worker Raven Aderibigbe, Willow worked to secure a clothing donation bin on the DHS campus to reduce textile waste. This long-term solution promotes environmental responsibility and sustainable habits and raises funds to support DHS programs.

So the next time you clean out your closet, support DHS and bring your gently used clothing, shoes, linens, and other textiles to the Clothes Bin® textile recycling bin, now located in the DHS back parking lot near Commerce Drive and W Howard Ave.

How to Support Your Child's Success with Healthy Sleep

Sleep is one of the most powerful tools your child has to succeed in school, PE, and sports. When students get enough quality sleep, their bodies and brains are ready to learn, move, focus, and perform at their best.

Why sleep matters:

  • Sleep helps with memory, attention, problem-solving, and test performance in school.

  • Sleep improves speed, strength, endurance, coordination, and reaction time in PE and sports. It also helps reduce the risk of injury and supports muscle recovery.

  • Good sleep supports a strong immune system, a healthy mood, and better stress management.

How you can help your child get better sleep:

  • Ensure your child is getting the recommended amount of sleep: 9–12 hours/day for ages 5–12 and 8–10 hours/day for ages 13-18.

  • Encourage a consistent sleep schedule, even on weekends.

  • Turn off phones, tablets, TVs, and gaming devices at least an hour before bedtime.

  • Create a relaxing bedtime routine of reading, stretching, or listening to calm music to help your child wind down.

  • Keep a comfortable, dark and quiet sleep environment to help your child stay asleep longer and wake up refreshed.

  • Encourage healthy meals, hydration, and regular physical activity during the day.

If you have questions or need resources, please reach out to your school health team or your child's PE teachers. Thank you for partnering with us to support your child's health and success.

BASC-3 BESS Student Support Expanding to K-2

CSD is excited to expand the BASC-3 Behavioral and Emotional Screening System (BESS) to include students in grades K–2.

The BASC-3 BESS is a brief universal screener designed to provide a snapshot of students’ behavioral, emotional, and social wellbeing. It is not a diagnostic tool and does not diagnose a mental health, behavioral, or emotional condition. Instead, the information helps our schools better understand overall student needs, identify areas where additional support may be beneficial, and make informed decisions that consider other available information and observations about schoolwide and student support.

For the 2026-27 school year, students in grades 3-12 will take the student self-report of the screener at their school during the fall and spring administration dates. Teachers will complete screeners for K-2 students based on their observations of students in the school setting.

The BASC-3 BESS will be open October 1-30 in the Fall and March 1-31 in the Spring. No action is required for your student to participate in the screening. If you would prefer that your student NOT participate in the universal screening, please complete the opt-out form by Friday, September 11, 2026, for the fall administration and by Friday, February 12, 2027, for the spring administration.

For more information, see the Universal Social Emotional Behavior Screener Frequently Asked Questions, or join one of these upcoming parent workshops.

STAR Assessments Reports Available This Week

STAR Assessment reports will be sent home with students for grades K-8 during the week of August 17, while high school parents will receive their students' reports electronically. If you have specific questions about STAR, please reach out to your school. During the first two weeks of school, students took STAR Assessments, which are brief, computer-adaptive tests in reading and math that help our teachers measure academic growth, pinpoint learning levels, and tailor instruction to meet every child's needs.
