Spring is finally here! The world around us is bursting into bloom, reminding us that this season is all about renewal and growth. Just like the flowers emerging after a long winter, our students and staff are pushing forward with energy and determination as we head into the final stretch of the school year.

With less than two months remaining, it’s a busy time filled with incredible learning experiences, celebrations, and opportunities to engage. While we keep our focus on finishing strong, let’s also take a moment to pause and appreciate the progress we've made – stop and smell the roses, so to speak!

As we reflect on our journey this year, we are reminded of the incredible spirit that makes The School District of University City so special. One beautiful example of this is a video (see below) created by Pershing's music instructor, Mr. Daniel DuMaine. Through this heartfelt production, he showcases his love of University City as well as the joy, talent and dedication of students and staff. We are so proud to share this with you as a testament to the strength and unity of our school community—because in U. City, We Are Family!

"Farming While Black" Community Screening

One of our most exciting upcoming events is the special community screening of Farming While Black on Tuesday, April 15, at University City High School. This student-led event is sponsored by our Education for Sustainability & Agriculture Program and features a powerful documentary highlighting the rise of young Black farmers and their commitment to sustainable agriculture.

The evening begins at 5:15 p.m. with refreshments featuring produce from our own gardens and student-made products from Brittany Brand. The film screening starts at 6 p.m., followed by a panel discussion at 7:30 p.m. with the film’s director, Mark Decena. We hope you’ll join us for this inspiring and thought-provoking event. To register, please click here.

Additionally, our next CommUNITY Chat will take place on Thursday, April 24, at 6 p.m. in the UCHS library. This session, in collaboration with Special School District (SSD), will focus on supporting our students with IEPs. Families will have the opportunity to learn more about the services SSD provides and engage in meaningful discussions on how we can work together to best support student success. Your voice matters, and we encourage you to attend.

We are also gathering valuable input from our families through several important surveys, including our Title I Survey and the Panorama Family Surveys. These surveys help shape the future of our schools by informing us of what’s working well and where we can improve. Your feedback is invaluable in ensuring we continue to meet the needs of our students, families, and staff.

  • Please click here to take the Title I Survey. (Deadline is April 18)
  • Please click here to take the Panorama Family Surveys. Please fill out the survey for each school your child(ren) attends. (Deadline is April 25)

As we move through these final months of the school year, let’s stay engaged, remain focused, and support one another. There is so much to celebrate, and together, we will wrap up the year with purpose and pride!

In Service of Our Children,

Sharonica L. Hardin-Bartley, Ph.D., PHR
