Hello from Mrs. Matthys and Sgt. White

Hello everyone! Welcome to the first edition of "Decisions that Stick," where we're about helping SCOH students make awesome choices that lead to a happier, healthier you. This month, we're kicking things off with something important, but often overlooked: communication.

Communication is Your Superpower! Communication is Your Superpower!

You probably didn't realize this but communication takes practice to be good at it. Like playing a sport, creating art or your favorite video game. It takes practice, lots of practice but you can do it.

Think about it, how many times has a misunderstanding with a friend, a missed assignment, or a tricky situation felt a lot easier or harder, depending on how you talked about it? That's because communication is like your personal superpower. It helps you navigate everything from the classroom to your friendships.

How Does Communicating Help You Win the Day? How Does Communicating Help You Win the Day?

Making S.M.A.R.T. Decisions

Ever had to choose between hanging out with friends or studying for a big test? When you can clearly talk through your options, ask for advice (maybe from a trusted teacher or parent!), and express your concerns, you're more likely to make a choice you won't regret. It's like when your group project needs a leader, and someone clearly explains their idea – everyone gets on board faster!

Time Management Magic

Juggling homework, sports, and social life can be tough. Good communication helps here, too. If you're feeling overwhelmed, discussing more time with your teacher or informing your coach about a scheduling conflict can make a significant difference. It’s way better than just hoping no one notices you're falling behind, right?

Staying Safe and Avoiding Drugs

This is a big one. Knowing how to say "no" clearly and confidently, or how to talk to a trusted adult if you or a friend are struggling, is incredibly powerful. Your school, like the Hobart Police Department and School City of Hobart, emphasizes the "See Something, Say Something" message. This open communication helps create a safer environment for everyone. Being able to talk about what's going on, even if it's tough, can literally be a lifesaver.

Handling Those Emotions.

School can bring on all sorts of emotions, such as excitement, stress, frustration, and even sadness. When you can express how you're feeling, whether it's to a friend, a counselor, or a family member, it helps you understand and manage those emotions instead of letting them bottle up. Imagine you're upset about a bad grade. Instead of just bottling it up, talking to your teacher about what went wrong and how to improve can turn that frustration into a plan for success!

Now Go Out and Communicate! Now Go Out and Communicate!

Good communication isn't just about talking, it's about listening, understanding, and expressing yourself clearly. It's a skill that will help you in every part of your life, from now through adulthood. So, let's practice speaking up, listening closely, and making those connections!
