Back to School 2026

What Is the First Day of School For My Student?
The start of a new school year is kind of a big deal. At SPS, we tailor the first day of school by grade level to give every student the best start.
- Kindergarteners: Kindergarteners begin school on a "staggered start."
- Last names A-L start school Wednesday, September 9 (no school for kinders A-L September 10.)
- Last names M-Z start school Thursday, September 10 (no school for kinders M-Z September 9.)
- There is no school for all kindergarteners Friday, September 11 while class placements are decided.
- All kindergarteners attend school in their new classrooms Monday, September 14, and begin following the regular elementary calendar!
- Grades 1-5, 6 and 9: The first day of school is Wednesday, September 9.
- Grades 7-8 and 10-12: The first day of school is Thursday, September 10.
The full academic calendar is linked below.
Register and Review ✍🏻
Register and Review: Online registration is open now for 2026-27! This is also a good time to update items like health and custody information. Making sure we have all of your updated contact information in ParentVUE is key - your school and the District use this information to contact you about your student, and provide you with necessary information, including inclement weather and emergency updates.

Student Health 🩺
The District Health Services page includes a handy guide to symptoms and when and how long to keep kids out of school due to illness.
Immunizations: To register for school each year, you must be able to show that your child has received at least the first dose in any required vaccine series or the proper documentation to claim an exemption. The deadline for Oregon students to receive all required vaccinations is the fourth Wednesday in February, every year. Your health care provider or the Springfield Schools Health Center can help you determine which vaccines your student needs before the February deadline.
Student Medications: Families needing to check in medications to their school should plan to do so in person during the first days of the school year. Only medications that are needed while at school are allowed (no vitamins or once a day medications that can be taken at home.)
- Medications must be brought in by the parent/guardian in the original container.
- Prescription medications must have RX label, including inhalers and Epi-pens. If inhalers need to be carried on the student at all times, a doctor's note indicating that that student is capable of safe, self-administration should be provided to the school.
- Medications must have appropriate instructions on the bottle. The school is not allowed to give medications for off-label uses or different dosages than recommended.
Volunteer 🤝
Volunteer Application: SPS invites you, our families, and members of the community to be a volunteer in our schools. Volunteering in schools helps build stronger schools and a more connected community! Only have a little time here and there to spare? That's ok - it still makes a big difference for our students! Volunteers must complete an application and pass a background check.
Willamalane Fall Registration Opens Aug. 12
Registration for fall Willamalane programs opens at 8 a.m. on Aug. 12, including Kids Club, Elementary and Middle School Sports, and other after-school activities. Some programs fill quickly.
Save time on registration day by submitting a School Year 2026-27 Pass for each child before Aug. 12. The prerequisite pass stores required information in one place, so you won’t have to answer the same questions again for every program. This year, it’s required for many of Willamalane’s youth recreation programs, including popular options like Kids Night Out and Young Chefs. See fall youth programs and more helpful tips.

Attendance Matters
Success is school starts with showing up. At SPS schools, a focus on encouraging good attendance has resulted in a steady increase in daily attendance over the last five years. In 2025-26, the District's daily attendance was the highest it's been since the pandemic at 88.1%.
Every day matters.
As SPS works towards a goal of at least 90% daily attendance, we want to let families know we're on their attendance team. When barriers such as transportation, health concerns or other challenges affect attendance, SPS encourages families to reach out to their school so staff can help identify solutions and provide support.
We understand that illnesses are a good reason to stay home. Keeping kids at home when they are sick gets them well faster and helps keep other students and staff healthy. Find the latest guidance on when to keep students home for illness and when they are ready to return in the Health Services section of our website.
Families can find more resources and ideas for supporting strong attendance on our website.

Familiar Faces in New Places: SPS Admin Changes
SPS is proud to announce several key administrative and leadership changes for the upcoming 2026–2027 school year. These experienced leaders bring a commitment to student success and support to their new positions.
How to share concerns and get support
We value open and trusting communication between families and staff. If you ever have a question or concern about your child's learning experience we want to ensure your voice is heard.
- Speak with your child's teacher first - this is often where issues are most easily resolved since teachers know your child's needs and classroom context best.
- If needed, connect with school leadership - school leaders support both instructional and disciplinary matters and cen help coordinate meetings with staff, students, and families.
- Still need help? Contact District-level directors - They can schedule meetings and facilitate a resolution at the District level.
Help Shape the Future of the Springfield Public Library
The Springfield Public Library & History Museum is inviting community members to help shape the future of library and museum services by participating in its 2026 User Survey. The survey takes approximately five to 10 minutes to complete and will remain open through August 15, 2026.
The survey will help inform future priorities for programs, collections, exhibits, services, and community initiatives. Feedback is welcomed from everyone, including frequent visitors, occasional users, and residents who have never visited the Library or History Museum.
Did you know that EVERY student that attends the Springfield School District and their families is eligible to get a Springfield Public Library card for free? Claim your free library card on the Springfield Public Library website.
Report A Safety Concern Online
Springfield Public Schools prides itself on creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students. Bullying and harassment have no place in our schools.
As a commitment to that pledge, we’ve made it easier to report instances of harassment, intimidation, bullying, cyberbullying and teen dating violence online.
At the top of every school web page, you’ll find a link titled “Safety Concern.” This directs users to two options to report being unsafe at school.
And as always, you can share a concerning incident with a trusted adult by messaging them or talking face to face.
No matter which option you choose, our dedicated team of principals, counselors and staff are alerted of the report. They’re ready to investigate every report and take appropriate action to address the issue.
Springfield Public Schools Equity Statement
The SPS equity statement reflects the District's mission of serving every student, every day.
The statement stands as an affirmation of the District’s commitment to equity, inclusion and belonging and will guide our continued efforts to support the vision of SPS as a place where students want to learn and staff want to work.
Springfield Public Schools board meetings are available for anyone to watch live or on-demand on the district's Vimeo channel. View the calendar of upcoming board meetings. A Spanish interpreter is also available during in-person board meetings.
In accordance with public meeting law and Oregon HB 2560, the school board will be providing remote access through live streamed meetings to our community.
