A Message for Our Current 8th Grade Families: The Path to DHS
We understand that preparing for high school is a major milestone. To support a seamless transition for our graduating Bulldogs, we are sharing the following information provided directly from Decatur High School (DHS) to support your 8th-grade students and parents:
Student Visits: Students will visit DHS on January 12th or January 14th (the final confirmed date is forthcoming from DHS).
The Agenda: During their visit, students will tour the campus and receive an essential introduction to their upcoming high school course selection options.
Communication: DHS will release full details regarding the visit schedule and parent communication before the start of December break.
We thank you for your partnership as we guide your students through these important decisions. Together, we can make this a smooth and exciting transition!

Popping with Inquiry: WIN Classes Explore Popcorn Science 🍿
Recently, the WIN classes of Ms. Beyer and Mr. Stroy combined their math and science expertise to answer a tasty research question: Does the brand of popcorn affect the number of kernels popped?Exploring dependent, independent, and controlled variables, the students mixed lab skills and math skills to discover the differences in popcorn brands.
Inspired by a real-world observation—bags of popcorn that left too many unpopped kernels—students designed an experiment to test their hypothesis. Working in small groups, they compared a store’s generic brand against two well-known name brands. By calculating the ratio of popped to unpopped kernels, students determined the percentage of popping success for each batch.
The results were eye-opening! Students discovered significant variations between the brands, with some trials resulting in only a single popped kernel out of the entire batch. After analyzing the data, the teams celebrated their hard work by enjoying the fruits (or kernels) of their labor! 🍿

Parent coach Micah Lewin and teacher coach Liz Williams are incredibly proud of the squad. The students demonstrated outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and brilliance throughout the day. Reading as Rest
December brings a different kind of busy, with schoolwork, events, holidays, and shifting routines. In the middle of that noise, reading can become something more than academic practice. It can become a pause. A quiet moment that helps your child reset, breathe, and find balance. Many middle schoolers think of reading as another assignment to complete. But when we shift reading into the category of rest, they begin to experience it differently, less pressure, more peace.
Try a “Silent 10”
Choose a consistent time each day for everyone in the home to read quietly—no phones, no background noise, no pressure. Just 10 minutes of calm together. And let your child choose what they read:
a poem
a magazine article
a graphic novel
a chapter from a favorite book
Choice builds ownership, and ownership builds ease.
Add a Touch of Reflection: Afterward, ask one gentle question:
“What emotion did this reading leave you with?”
“Did you see yourself, a friend, or a real-life situation in this story?”
This helps your child connect reading with self-awareness, not stress.
Reading for peace, not performance, teaches students that books can center them during the most hectic weeks.
“Stillness is not empty, it’s full of words waiting to speak.”
For more creative holiday reading ideas, reach out to Mrs. Braxton, Reading Specialist at BHMS, at tbraxton@csdecatur.net for guidance and additional resources.
