By Parents for Parents: A note to our JAGuard families!

Hello Winter Guard families!

We hope you have had a wonderful holiday! Winter Guard is just around the corner so we wanted to remind you of a few items before we reconvene!

Please sign up to sponsor winter guard after-school snacks! Those days are long and snacks help them get through the evening! You can find the sign up link below.

Practice days:

  • Attire: if you don't have something already, make sure to collect a few dance/athletic wear items before practices start in January. Remember that they must be black (or at least mostly black) and 'form fitting' (meaning not baggy). Males can wear shorts.

  • Water Jugs: please make sure your student brings their water jug on practice days. We will not be supplying water bottles and they need to stay hydrated!

  • Medications: If your student has allergies or experiences headaches or cramps, make sure to supply them with those medications - remember, boosters will no longer provide those types of items to students!

  • Braces / wraps: Students with injuries should make sure to bring the necessary support they need to all practices. The directors will not let students practice without it - meaning the student will sit on the side and watch to learn.

Electrical Tape for rifles: students will need to purchase and provide their own black & white electrical to wrap their rifles. Boosters will provide tape to wrap the flag poles. We recommend Scotch brand for the white tape as other brands will turn yellow.

Sync your calendar! Sync to the band/guard Google Calendar by clicking on the + symbol next to "Google Calendar" on the bottom right corner of the online calendar.

Communication is key! The success of each team relies heavily on the attendance of every member! But we know that emergencies happen so please email Mr. Duffy and Mr. Washington as soon as you can to provide them with as much advance notice as possible.

If you are not already a member, we HIGHLY recommend you join the Guard Parent GroupMe. To do so, simply click here: https://groupme.com/join_group/62482893/qze2Zex7

Also remember that we are no longer a 240 piece group anymore! It's just us now! We will need help with meals, uniforms, building props and more! Not involved yet? Get involved by filling out the Winter Guard Volunteer Interest Form!

We hope that this information is helpful to you and look forward to seeing you soon!

Love, Peace, and Color Guard,

Ida and Michelle

WINTER GUARD FEE

As we discussed at the WG meeting, among other costs, winter guard (WG) fees cover or offset costs related to equipment, costumes, and props, including costs for show theme flags and performance vinyl floors. For new members, the WG fee covers your jacket, first set of gloves, unitard, and practice attire.

Amount of fee due by Friday, January 27th:

  • For students who were guard members in the fall, they will pay $200 (same as previous years)
  • For students new to winter guard but had been in band, they will pay $325 (difference between fall guard ($500) and band fee ($375) = $125 plus WG fee ($200)
  • For students totally new to band/guard, they will pay $360 (Total needed to meet WG uniform and equipment costs)

    • Go to website store: https://www.johnsonbands.com/shop

MEAL PLANS

As was the case in the fall, the boosters provide a meal plan service to winter guard members. With that said, and as we shared at our meeting, it's just us color guard families now so we will need YOUR help to provide these meals! Please sign up to help pick up, set up, and/or distribute in the link below!

Also like in the fall, long practice day meal plans are OPTIONAL but competition day meal plans are REQUIRED.

Please note: This year, because JV and Varsity do not have identical schedules, there will be separate meal plans for JV and Varsity. Please make sure to select the correct team and meal plan.

Like marching season, these meals will be ordered from various fast-food restaurants and will be served to the students at times designated by directors.

Purchase deadline for meal plans is as follows:

Practice meal plans is Sunday, January 14th.

Competition meal plans is Sunday, January 28th.

*Meal Plans are for students only- no parents, siblings, or guests.

Refunds: Missed or forfeited meals will not be refunded. Prorated refunds will only be given in the event of unforeseen circumstances through February 12th at the discretion of the Band Boosters. Unused meals cannot be assigned to a different student.

AFTER SCHOOL PRACTICE SNACKS

As you all know from the Winterguard calendar, the guard will need snacks to get through the long days. That's a lot of snacks! So we will need everyone's help to make sure they have snacks that will give them the energy they need!

We need 33 practices sponsored - which can be achieved if only a little more than HALF of our families to sign up! So please sign up to "sponsor" one of the dates listed below.

These dates are only for the AFTER-SCHOOL PRACTICE snacks. Full day practices and competition day snacks will be covered by Winterguard fees.

As it states in the signup, please make sure that:

  • For MONDAYS, there are enough snacks for the full team: 55 people.
  • There are enough snacks for 30 people on Tuesdays and Thursdays:
    • TUESDAYS are JV practice days
    • THURSDAYS are Varsity practice days
  • Snacks are packaged in a way that makes it easy for students to distribute on their own.
  • Snacks must be delivered to the band hall no later than 3:30 on the day for which you have signed up. You are welcome to send them days or even weeks early. Just make sure to label them with YOUR NAME and "WINTER GUARD".

If you are not able to sponsor snacks for a practice or would just prefer to send money instead, please feel free to make a donation towards the purchase of snacks! Just Venmo your donation to @JohnsonBandBoosters with the tag: "color guard snacks". Any amount helps!

Thanks in advance!

Sign up to sponsor a snack day here!
FYI both teams practice on Mondays. JV practices on Tuesdays. Varsity on Thursdays.

WOODEN CHAIR DONATIONS NEEDED!

Varsity will be using wooden chairs in their winter guard show. If you or someone you know have any chairs that we can use, please donate them to the band hall by Saturday, January 7th!

Please know that they will be painted so you probably won't want it back!

It helps if they are light enough to carry!

Right now we have 9 chairs...only 18 more to go!! ;-P

Don't have a chair to donate? Help us by posting on your neighborhood app (ie. Nextdoor) or posting to your friends on Facebook or texting close friends and family!

LET'S DO THIS!

We will take all types of chairs! Examples below

Remind 101 (Real time communications from Directors)

Directors send out real time information via Remind 101. Students and Parents are all invited to sign up. SIGN UP via the Remind 101 app or TEXT your class code to 81010.

During the fall marching season, announcements are sent out via the Band Remind 101. The Class code is @jagbandpts.

Mr. Duffy sometimes sends messages specifically to the guard via the JAGuard Remind 101. The Class code for the guard Remind 101 is @thejagway.

GroupMe (Real time communications between parents)

Have questions about game day? meal plans? schedules? This is the place to ask!

Each "section" will have a Parent Section Lead that will create a GroupMe. Here is where you can families can ask all of these questions! It is also a great forum to organize section get-togethers or practices!

We also invite extended family members (Aunts, Uncles, Grandparents - ESPECIALLY those who volunteer!) to sign up.

It is very difficult for our volunteers and directors to keep up with Facebook exchanges. Therefore, we ask that questions be directed to the GroupMe. Thanks in advance!
